“You’re not going to be able to walk for a week.”

Zoe laughs, making me miss home more than I ever have before.

All I want is to get on a plane and go back home to her. Maybe reenact our phone call until she’s on her knees and begging for more.

“I miss you,” she says, her tone softening.

I sigh, warmth spreading through me. “I miss you too, Zoe. Only a couple more days. Then I’m going to be home. Are you ready for your show tomorrow night?”

“Not even a little bit.”

“Well, tell me all about what’s bothering you,” I say, yawning as I cross one leg over the other. “Maybe we can figure it out together.”

As Zoe starts to ramble about her fears, I close my eyes and listen to the sound of her voice.

I didn’t think that leaving her was going to be this hard.

She’s struggling, and she needs me right now, but there’s not much I can do to help her from here.

We talk until she falls asleep, the soft sounds of her snores coming through the phone.

I end the call with a smile, tossing it to the side of the bed before getting up and heading for the shower.

If I had known that loving her was going to be this good, I would have done everything in my power to give her the relationship she deserves earlier.

Since I can’t go back in time and change the past, I’m going to give her the future she deserves.

Ava hugs me before heading for the front door.

“I would stay tonight if I could, but I got called back to the prison. There was a fight and it’s all hands on deck. Are you sure you’re okay on your own?”

I nod and walk with her to the door. “Camila is going to be home sometime after midnight. Not sure when, but I’ll be okay until she gets here. Don’t worry about it. Go take care of the people who need you.”

Ava nods and hugs me again. “Call me if you need anything, and I’ll come back here as soon as possible, okay?”

“Go!” I laugh and untangle myself from her embrace as I give her a gentle push out the door and to her car.

She looks back at me before getting into her car.

Though I know that she’s worried about me, there’s nothing to worry about.

Ruben is staying in the little guest house not too far from the main house. The security team is roaming the property. Everything is safe.

I shouldn’t have told her about the situation with Demarco and the nightmares.

But as much as I want to protect my sister from the darker parts of the life I now live, she’s also one of the few people who understands.

She spends her days working in a prison, close to criminals.

Ava sees the prisoners as humans, not just people who have to suffer due to what they did on the worst day of their life.

She honks before driving off into the darkness, leaving me standing in the doorway.

I watch her taillights disappear before going back inside and locking the door.
