Christian grabs my hand and spins me around, pulling me back against his chest.

His heartbeat races against me as his arms wrap around my waist. His head rests on my shoulder, his teeth grazing my earlobe.

“I could make you feel all kinds of things, Zoe. You just have to beg for it.”

My cheeks flame, and when I turn to look at him, he’s laughing.

I flip him off as the band on stage finishes their last song.

“Funny. You think this entire thing is funny. I could blow your entire plan for whatever it is you’re doing right now.”

He lifts a shoulder and drops it. “You could, but then I would leave you in the capable hands of your protection detail while I go speak with your father. Now, if you want to play stupid games, I have a whole line up of stupid prizes for you. However, I really don’t want to give them to you.”

“You’re infuriating.” I poke a finger into his chest. “You think you can do what you did, then come here and rile me up? You have another thing coming.”

Christian grabs my finger, holding it tight. “You’re lucky that I’m the only one who can hear you right now.”

I swallow hard, my heart racing.

He’s a dangerous man. I should know better than to toe the line with him. After all, he was willing to kidnap me in the middle of the night and force me into a marriage to get what he wants.

Don’t make stupid mistakes, Zoe. You still don’t know what this man is capable of.

If there wasn’t a security detail posted around the bar, I might have a chance at running. However, they would catch me before I got through the doors.

It’s too risky to even try.

And he did say that I could still perform. He’s not making my dreams seem like they’re a waste of time like Mom and Dad do.

This entire situation is ridiculous.

“Zoe!” The owner of the bar, Joe, comes over with a smile on his face.

He loops his arm over my shoulder, completely ignoring the murderous look Christian gives him. “You were great up there tonight. I knew that making you a regular here was going to draw in the crowds.”

“Thanks, Joe.” I shrug my way out from beneath his arm.

I’m already in enough trouble with Christian. I don’t want anything else to happen.

“I mean it. There were some agents in the crowd tonight. I have no doubt that you’ll have people approaching you with some deals before you know it.”

He looks over at Christian and holds out his hand. “Joe Tellegato. I’m the owner of this place and the person who keeps telling Zoe that she has to start performing more.”

Christian takes his hand and shakes it. “She is something of a songbird. I agree with you, though. It would be a shame not to go after her dreams when she is so good at it.”

I stare at him with wide eyes, not quite believing what I’m hearing.

My heart thuds against my chest, conflicting feelings racing through my mind.

I should be upset with him for this entire ordeal, but it’s hard to get over the high of performing.

Especially when he thinks that I should follow my dream.

“Well, I’m going to leave you two to the rest of your night. Have a good time. I’ll see you next week, Zoe. Put on another performance like that, and I’m sure you’ll have those agents knocking down your door soon.”

Joe disappears back into the crowd, heading to the bar while my cheeks warm.

Christian watches me for a moment, his gaze unnerving.
