CHRISTIAN

The blaring of sirens has me jumping out of bed and grabbing my gun from my nightstand.

It takes only a second to pull on a pair of shorts before hurrying down the hall to Zoe’s room.

As I get to the door, someone shouts and there’s a crash.

I try the handle only to find it locked.

My heart hammers in my chest as I slam my shoulder against the door and tumble into the room.

Zoe is standing on her bed, a lamp in hand while a man stands on her balcony with the doors open.

There is shattered glass at his feet—a mix of the window he broke and whatever it was that she threw at him already.

I don’t think twice, aiming the gun at the intruder’s leg.

A gunshot rings through the room before the man drops to the ground, blood pouring from his leg.

Zoe screams before scrambling off the bed and out of the room.

I don’t take my eyes off the man on the ground.

“You picked the wrong house to break into,” I say, walking over to him.

I check him for a gun and come up empty. “Although, I’m sure that this was more than just an attempt to steal some money, isn’t it?”

The man groans, holding his leg. “You’re a fucking bastard.”

‘You’ve got that right.” I crouch down beside his head, grinning as I look at him. “But you haven’t seen anything yet. Just wait until I get you alone in a few minutes.”

Ruben comes rushing into the room, his hair standing on end and his glasses off kilter. “I got the message about the alarm going off.”

“Good.” I set up the alarm system to alert his phone as well. “I’ve got to deal with this. Go find Zoe and take her to the library. Keep her in there until I come to get her.”

“Who is this?” Ruben asks, pushing his glasses on top of his head and rubbing his eyes. “I should have put the damn contacts in before I rushed over here.”

“Now you know for next time.”

I stoop to search the man for weapons. When I find none, I punch his lights out and toss him over one shoulder. “Don’t know who he is yet. But I’m going to know soon.”

Ruben grins and nods, leading the way out of the room. He takes off in search of Zoe while I head to the hidden elevator that leads to the basement.

The man groans as I deposit him on the floor of the elevator and smash my finger against the button.

The ride down is quiet, but I can feel the tension building. I can almost smell the fear seeping off this man. I slap him awake.

“You know, you really shouldn’t have broken into my home. I don’t like intruders. Hell, I think they’re the scum of the earth. You would rather profit off another person’s hard work than to do anything for yourself.”

The man groans and tries to pull himself into the corner of the elevator as the doors open, as if that is going to do anything to protect him.

“You don’t have to make this harder than it needs to be.” I grab the ankle of his injured leg and pull him out of the elevator.

His screams ring out as I drag him across the concrete floor to the middle of the soundproofed room.

The rest of the basement is through a door to my right. Out there, it looks like a normal basement stacked with boxes of things I don’t need right now but might need in the future.

The door is hidden—a secret that only a few people know. It’s the kind of place I take people to when I need answers.
