I know who is trying to get to Zoe. There’s only one person outside the people closest to me that knows she is here.

I have to make a point, though. I need to send a message. That’s what any other leader would do in my position.

I have to make it clear that those who break into my home and try to take what’s mine will pay for it.

“And who sent you after her?” I press the tip of the blade against his earlobe.

He shakes his head, the sharp point scraping against his skin,

Blood trickles down the side of his neck as he looks at the ground.

“Last chance before I cut off your ear.” I position the knife at the top of his ear. “Who sent you here?”

“Jeremiah Redford.”

I sigh, shaking my head as I crouch down in front of him. “That really wasn’t so hard, was it? All you had to do was tell me the truth.”

His eyes grow wide as I stand up and position the blade at his throat.

Tears roll down his cheeks as I drag the scalpel from one side to the other.

My stomach lurches as I take a step back and force myself to look at what I’ve done.

I stare at the body for only a few moments before leaving the bloody knife on the table at the side of the room.

I strip out of my shorts and step into the shower to wash away any blood splatter before heading to a little closet beside the door.

After pulling on my clothes, I head out of the room and message my cleaning crew.

They can handle the mess inside while I go deal with the man behind my most recent problems.

The sun is just starting to rise when Jeremiah walks into his home office, wrapped in a black robe with a cup of coffee in his hand.

I stay still in his chair, the back turned to him so he can’t see me.

It might be something straight out of a bad horror movie, but I need this man scared.

I’ve been waiting here for the last couple of hours, hoping he would stumble in here to call his man and ask about his daughter.

As his footsteps creak across the hardwood floors, I turn in the chair and look at him.

Jeremiah stills, his expression blank even though I’m sure he’s fuming.

“I’ve been waiting to talk to you,” I say as I lean back and cross my arms. “I thought that our little arrangement was going to work out. I really wanted to believe that you were a greasy politician with a heart made of something other than flaming dog shit, but I guess I was wrong.”

“What the fuck are you doing in my house?” he asks, his voice tight with rage. “Get out of here, or I will be calling the police. I have some high-ranking friends who would love to get some time alone with you.”

“Cute.” I grin and kick my feet up on his desk, watching the way his gaze darts around the room.

He may play the tough guy, but we both know who is in control right now, and it isn’t him.

“Sending a man to break into my house and try to get to Zoe was stupid. I should kill you for that, but then you’d stop being useful to me.”

“You’re a monster. Your kind deserves to rot in jail.”

I roll my eyes and stand up, rounding the desk to stop in front of him. “What I can’t figure out is why you are sending a man after your daughter. What was he supposed to do when he got to her? Do you really want me to have to kill her and you?”

“She would be better off dead than with you. She wouldn’t have to pay for my sins that way. She would be free of this entire mess.”
