“I’m going to get a bath going for us. It will help with any soreness.”

As the tub starts to fill, I wonder how the hell I can see both sides of Christian and be okay with both of them.

Maybe one day, I’ll find a way to accept both sides. Right now, though, there is no way that I can be okay with the monster. Not when I know what he is capable of.

Not when I’ve seen the blood on his hands.

I have to do what Camila says. I have to try to see the best parts of him for now and learn how to move past the rest.

The way Christian makes me feel is complicated and consuming.

I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but right now, I’m going to get in the bath with him and enjoy the night for what it is:

A moment in time that I might never get again.

CHRISTIAN

Zoe snores softly beside me as my phone vibrates on the bedside table.

I groan and roll over, running a hand down my face.

The last thing I want to deal with right now is another problem.

It’s been a good night, despite what I did to Zoe yesterday.

I still can’t believe that I could have been that cruel. I work so hard to not be that person, but when I’m trying to sabotage myself, the monster I try to hide comes rushing back.

I grab the phone and head into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me.

I want to crawl back into bed with Zoe even as I slide my thumb across the screen.

“Alessio, what’s so important that you need to call me in the middle of the night?”

He chuckles as Billie shouts something in the background. “I was going to wait to tell you until the morning, but Billie said she would chop off my balls if I did.”

I chuckle and flick on the bathroom light. “And what is she threatening you over this time?”

“I know who’s after you.”

As I lean against the counter, I roll my eyes. “I know who’s after me too. The men who used to follow my father. This isn’t new information.”

“There’s more!” Billie shouts in the background.

Alessio sighs. “Yeah. There is more. If she would let me tell you what I found, then she wouldn’t have to shout over me.”

“Billie is always going to be a brat. That’s the woman you’re choosing to spend the rest of your life with.”

“I know.” His voice is filled with love and admiration. “Back to your problem, though. You might know the men who keep trying to kill you, but you don’t know who the person sending them is.”

“Are we going to keep playing this guessing game, or are you going to tell me what’s going on?” My tone is sharper than intended, but I just want to go back to bed.

Back to Zoe.

“Someone is cranky.” Alessio laughs.

Billie starts shouting again. “Demarco Jones is the man behind the problem.”
