The bar comes down across our laps once the ride is full.

I’m nearly bouncing in my seat as the roller coaster starts to move.

It’s been a long time since I went to the amusement park. I think I was still in high school the last time I got to spend a day on rides and pretending that I don’t have a care in the world.

The roller coaster starts to climb the massive incline near the start of the track. It’s slow, but the tension starts to build the closer we get to the top.

Fat white clouds drift across the blue sky. Children are already starting to shriek as we hit the top of the slope.

Christian reaches out and takes my hand, squeezing as the roller coaster crests over the top and plummets toward the bottom.

I scream, throwing our hands up in the air as the roller coaster whips around the track.

Christian grips my hand tighter, his jaw set in a hard line as we go around the final sharp curve in the track and start to slow to a stop.

“You looked like you were going to shit yourself.” I grin wide as I pull him to the next ride.

“I hate roller coasters,” he groans as we stop in front of another ride.

I look at the loops that will put us upside down before glancing back at him.

He sighs. “You love this shit, don’t you?”

“I can go on this one on my own if you would rather sit it out.”

Christian shakes his head. “I said that I hate them, Zoe, not that I’m not going to do something with you that you obviously love.”

Butterflies erupt in my stomach as we join the line for the next ride.

As we wait, I don’t miss the looks that people give him.

I have to be honest; he does look terrifying. The lack of smiles, groomed beard, and tattoos covering his arms make him look like the kind of man most people would avoid.

He’s also the kind of man that I’m starting to see a future with, even though the way we got together is less than ideal.

The only part I still get hung up on is his job.

Christian does what he has to. He protects the people who rely on him, and I can’t fault him too much for that. Although, I wish that he didn’t have to kill people to make that happen.

However, I know if I love the man, I’m also going to have to learn to love the monster.

The corner of La Neige is dark as I sit at a booth between the stage and the bar, watching my wife enchant the crowd around her.

She stands beneath the bright stage lights, holding the microphone and belting out the song she spent all of last week writing.

I barely saw her. If she wasn’t sleeping, she was locked away in her studio and working.

Not that I mind. If she stays in that studio, it means that she’s safe. I know where she is, and her security detail has her surrounded. There is no way that Demarco or her father are getting to her.

In the bar, everything is out in the open.

From where I sit, I can see the bar. I watch the people who enter, waiting for the next person who wants to kill me.

I still think that her performing right now is a bad idea, but I can’t be another person who holds her back.
