“That water is dirty,” Eric aptly reminded me.

I blew lightly into the liquid, illuminating it with a golden orb. Cleanse.

Eric sat beside me, wearing nothing but his jeans. Wickedly handsome features appeared when I turned to him and held the cupped water to his mouth. “It’s safe to drink now.”

“Is there no end to your magic?”

Warm breath trickled over my fingers as he bent toward my hands to take a sip. Surreal moonlight flickered over his features, a result of clouds drifting over the moon. When he was done sipping, he sat back and wiped his mouth with the back of his palm.

I sipped the rest of the water and then stretched my legs out on the riverbank. “Is that a complaint?”

“I’m just wondering how much of that you use during sex.”

Heat burned my cheeks as I giggled. “I may occasionally add small enhancements.”

“You can make my dick bigger?”

I gaped at him. “Honey, it doesn’t need to be bigger.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure I can make it bigger. But again, there’s no need. You’re the perfect size, Eric.”

He smirked. “I’m glad to hear it.”

Stop flirting with him. I blinked and turned back to the river, trying to organize my thoughts into important for now and important for later. Yet the more I tried to contain them, the faster they rushed out of my control.

I only wanted to erase my actions from the past thirty minutes. Kindness was fine for Eric. That was to be expected. But I broke a promise. I did something I said I wouldn’t do—with someone I said I wasn’t even interested in. A lie like that could do enough damage to cause a war.

Well, that suddenly put things into perspective. The vampire-wolf wars started with a selfish action, didn’t it? While I hadn’t murdered Eric, I basically murdered my friendship with Kiara. She had trusted me to keep my word and, at the very least, control my urges.

What did that mean if I wasn’t strong enough to resist Eric anymore when the trip was over? I didn’t want to go back to Hayden territory and lean into a mate announcement when I hadn’t discussed it with my bestie. She would go from BFF to stepdaughter in an instant—and I wasn’t sure how that would even feel on top of everything else.

That’s probably why she wants to talk.

Eric held a stone in front of my face. “Don’t make me say it, GG.”

I chortled while accepting the black tourmaline. “You have a great memory.”

“I used to be a great partner.”

Sadness came with his words, a regret for his past that I didn’t quite understand. I never made many mistakes with dating, mostly because I rarely had the opportunity to make those mistakes. I had never gotten pregnant, and I never got so caught up in someone that they burned me from trusting them.

I never had the time. Magic always came first.

After turning the stone around in my fingers, I decided not to burden Eric with my broken promise. It wasn’t his responsibility to hold me accountable for it, so I didn’t want to make it another worry for him. With a grin, I handed the stone back. “Tired, actually.”

“Tired?” He hummed thoughtfully as he tucked the stone into his pocket. “That usually means I don’t want to talk right now.”

“Is that so?” Some agitation carried on my tone. I couldn’t help it.

Because I was terribly tired.

Eric stood up and extended a hand to me, hoisting me from the ground in a fluid motion. “Can you track the B&B?”

I smiled weakly. “Sure.”

“Uh, you might need these.” He held out my blouse and leggings. “I, uh, made sure they didn’t get too dirty...or torn.”
