My eyes snapped open. “You mean that?”

She nodded. “I want to try to change my luck this time. I’m tired of relying on the universe or getting lost in my work.”

“I respect a working woman.”

She grinned shyly. “I mean, I don’t want to be so bogged down by tasks that I miss my entire life.”

“I understand that.”

“When I saw how you reacted to your ex, I just…” She frowned while letting her gaze drift to my chin. “All I wanted to do was protect you.”

I swallowed the anxiety that had balled up in my throat. “That’s what I was doing, GG. I had to protect you. I can’t explain it.”

“I saw the way you responded to Dill checking me out.”

An unprompted growl rattled my throat. She chuckled while stroking my cheek, the delicious sound of her laugh making my inner wolf whimper.

“Just like that,” she whispered. “You just do it without thinking. That’s sweet.”

I bowed my head toward her. “I know we shouldn’t even be considering this. I know you told Kiara we would wait until we could sit down to talk.”

“I know.”

“It’s just unfair.”

She met my gaze. “What’s unfair?”

“How much you understand me.”

Her eyes glowed affectionately as she stood on her toes to kiss my mouth lightly. I pursed my lips. I met her kiss with a softness I didn’t know I was capable of giving, the kind of genuine warmth I didn’t think would ever return to me. Casual affection had once taken up a small portion of my life. Thanks to Teresa being a selfish twat, I had lost that part of me.

But now…

Now, it seemed to be back in a totally different form with a completely different woman.

And I just didn’t know what to do with it.

I caught Regina by the waist and tilted her back, sliding my right hand up her spine as my left hand cradled the small of her back. She relinquished control, trusting me to hold her until I was done exploring the crevice of her mouth. As I plunged my tongue between her lips, she slurped me into her mouth, dragging a growl of yearning right out of me.

Desire pulsed through my veins. My inner wolf yapped and howled, begging to be released into the world. He wanted to jump and play with Regina like he had days ago. Our pleasure wasn’t tied to the physicality of this world. It existed in its own vacuum, a beautiful creation that had sprung up as a surprise between us. To run at her side in my wolf form was to find contentment I never knew possible.

And here I thought shifters were supposed to mate with their own. My alphas proved otherwise, encouraging us to embrace this newfound lust as easily as we would have any other order from them. Spirited by her reception, I deepened the kiss and then hoisted her into my arms, carrying her to the kitchenette, where I propped her up on the counter.

She squeaked as she wrapped her legs around me. Her searing hot kisses were distracting enough to make me forget about my hunger. My phone rang in my pocket, inspiring an irritated growl that snapped me out of my fantasy—and reminded me that my stomach was begging for food.

I leaned back, peering down into her cloudy eyes. “You hungry?”

“Yeah.” She rocked her hips into me.

“I meant for food, GG.”

She giggled and rested her head on my shoulder. “That too.”

“What do you want?”

“No, Captain. I’m cooking for you this evening. If we have to wait, then I’m going to spoil you with food.”

I lifted her up and planted her on her feet. “I don’t think so, Mistress. You don’t get to boss me around like that.”
