Chapter Two

Koa

Everyone tried in different ways to find out what kind of shifter I was. What kind of shifters we were.

Frenchie was no exception.

I had made the mistake of taking off my button-down flannel after the sun reached its daily peak in the sky. Even though it was early spring, the heat was already getting to me, and so was the ski instructor currently running a red-tipped finger down my chest. I didn’t even see her coming. Usually, I avoided her and everything she had to say, but I was lost in thought to my own detriment.

I hadn’t even been listening to what she was saying. My shifter was much louder, growling and huffing out his utter disdain of the female in front of us. He didn’t want her. He didn’t want any female in the vicinity. The only one he wanted was his mate, and we had yet to meet her.

“So, what do you say, Koa? Take me for a ride?”

The fuck?

“Take you for a ride?” I repeated, sounding like an oaf.

“Yeah, up to the main lodge. What else did you think I was talking about?”

Taking her for a ride to the train station, so she could leave me the hell alone?

No, I couldn’t be rude.

Not yet anyway.

“I’m chopping wood here, Frenchie. I’m busy. There’s a four-wheeler right there. Keys are in it. Take yourself to the main lodge.”

She pouted, pushing out her bottom lip and then smiled revealing some lipstick on her front teeth that perfectly matched the color on her nails. “One day I’m going to wear you down, Koa. You and Orion. You will both realize that the person you’ve been wanting all along was standing right in front of you.”

“Go on before you’re late,” I barked out and raised the ax slightly, not to be intimidating but to show her I was more than ready to get back to work.

Orion and I started out as tour guides for the humans who wanted to explore the mountains and trails, but soon our brute strength and work ethic made us the heavy lifters. I couldn’t remember when I last gave a tour.

I missed it.

I missed the fresh air and explaining all the wildlife and trees to the tourists. It gave me all the fresh air I needed and my shifter side craved.

Resort management assigned Orion and us tasks that required great strength. Little did they know that the beasts we held within contained at least three times the strength our human sides did.

“What was that about?” Orion’s voice broke through my grunts. Thinking about everything sometimes frustrated me, and my best friend had told me on more than one occasion that I tended to grunt when angry. We had a splitter for the firewood for the guests at the resort but it broke a few months ago. Orion and I agreed to do it by hand until it was fixed and then a month later, we found out that it had never been sent to the shop to be repaired.

Amy, the resort director, said that some of the female guests liked the sight of Orion and I splitting wood. There were even pictures on social media.

“Take a break. I brought lunch. It was brown bag today.” He held up a large brown bag. Some of the chefs in the kitchen were shifters as well, and they knew our appetites and gave us grocery bags, while the guests got the smaller paper ones like those meant for school lunches.

We sat on a couple of logs. I didn’t realize how starving I was until the scents of Swiss cheese and roast beef hit my nose, enticing me. I pulled out a large sub sandwich, along with potato wedges and brownies. Some guests complained about sack-lunch Sundays but it was one of my favorite meals of the week.

“Have you considered what we talked about?”

Orion and I spoke about a lot of things, but he was referring to an app where shifters could find their mates.

A few of our coworkers had met both shifter and human mates.

Orion wanted us to sign up. We had known for quite a while that we would share a mate, but finding one who would not only share us but accept our unique kind of shifter wouldn’t be an easy task.

I knew it was a walk uphill, and that was putting it mildly.
