Nigel immediately sat up and focused on Barry.

“Sure. The more the merrier.” Xolani paused for a second, as if to hear what her friends were saying. “The girls are saying they want him to come. Ask him if he wants to.”

Absolutely not! The man had just called Xolani interesting. He was competition.

“Do you want to watch a movie with Xolani and her friends,” Barry asked Nigel, all while shaking his head to direct his friend to say no.

Of course, the traitor went the other way.

Nigel shrugged. “A movie sounds good.”

Barry almost threw his bottle at the man. He was tempted to lie to Xolani that Nigel didn’t want to come, but Nigel was acting very unpredictably. Who’s to say that he wouldn’t just grab the phone and say that Barry was lying?

So, with all the reluctance in the world, Barry said, “He’ll come. I guess.”

“Okay, that’s a date.” Xolani said, “We’ll talk more when we meet tomorrow, yeah?”

“Yeah.” He teased, “Try not to miss me too much.”

“I already feel like I’m dying of heartache,” she returned with mock earnestness. “Whatever shall I do?”

He was only half joking as he suggested, “Maybe drop by my place after the wedding is over? I can cure your heartache.”

Xolani laughed. “Goodbye, Barry.”

And with that, she ended the call.

When Barry put down the phone, Nigel asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to date this lady?”

“The better question is_” Barry glared at his friend. “When did you become such a social butterfly?”

Nigel offered a wolfish grin. “It’s a new thing I’m trying.”

“WHO INVITED YOU?” XOLANI DEMANDED when her brother showed up at her doorstep on Saturday, ready to watch a movie.

“I invited myself.” Camryn squeezed past her to get into her apartment.

“Hey, Cam.” Justine, who’d come to Xolani’s place so they could carpool, greeted him when he walked into the living room. “I didn’t know you were coming with us.”

“Neither did the hostess.” Xolani came up behind her brother. “Who even told you about the movie?”

While flopping onto the couch, Camryn hedged, “I have my ways of knowing what you’re up to.”

Both Xolani and Justine rolled their eyes. “Anika.”

“It wasn’t her. She didn’t tell me,” Camryn insisted, but the guilt in his eyes was as clear as daylight.

“You’re a terrible liar,” Xolani mocked. “And your co-conspirator is even worse. I bet if I call her right now, she’ll fold like a cheap suit.”

Xolani loved her friend, but the girl wasn’t someone she’d ever commit a crime with. Anika wouldn’t even need to see handcuffs to start singing like a canary.

“Don’t call her,” Camryn pleaded. “She’s innocent.”

“You have a strange definition for innocent.” Xolani demanded, “Why are you even here? You always say horror movies are fake, and you’d rather cut yourself if you need to see real blood.”

Camryn started, “Well, I heard_”
