"Who are you?," I stammer, struggling to maintain my composure. "What are you doing here?"

"Just someone who is waiting for you," he replies, his voice dripping with desire. "I've been watching you, Jane. You've captured my attention in ways I never thought possible."

My cheeks flush at his words, the heat between us rising like a wildfire. I can't help but be drawn to him, despite the danger that lies in succumbing to his allure.

"I don’t even know who you are," I whisper, my resolve wavering under the weight of his gaze.

"It doesn’t matter who I am," he insists, closing the distance between us. The air crackles with tension, our unspoken desires palpable. "You have no idea how much I crave your touch, Jane."

"Please," I plead, my mind reeling from the intensity of our attraction. "It’s not fair that you know my name, yet I don’t know yours."

"Does it truly matter?" he asks, his eyes locked onto mine. "Right now, we're just two people, alone in this room. Our titles mean nothing."

I can feel my resolve crumbling. His words hold me captive, igniting a fire within me that I've never experienced before.

I shake my head, trying to clear my muddled thoughts.

His voice is strained with restraint. "Tell me you don't want this, Jane. Tell me you don't feel the same desire coursing through your veins."

My body betrays me, craving his touch despite the consequences. The tension between us reaches its peak, our unspoken desires hanging in the air as our hearts beat as one.

But then suddenly, his eyes become pained with a flicker of conflict, a flash of…guilt? "Forgive me, Jane," he whispers, his voice filled with both longing and regret. With that, he turns on his heel and leaves, leaving me standing alone in the darkened chamber, confused and trembling from the intensity of what could have been.

CHAPTER

SIX

Henry

The moon casts an eerie glow over the castle grounds as I watch her over my camera feed. Her auburn hair dances in the wind like a crimson flame, and my heart burns with a forbidden desire that threatens to consume me. Jane Pinkerton, the orphaned maid who has captured my attention, She is utterly unaware of the fire she ignites within me.

My jaw hardens though when someone approaches her. A man. He’s walking toward Jane—my Jane.

I grab my computer and do a quick search of the staff since I can’t recall his name.

Edward Langley, a steward. Striking green eyes. Handsome jackal. My hands tighten around the edges of my desk as I grip the wood so hard I’m surprised I don’t splinter it.

So, he's noticed her too. A dangerous and unwelcome thought enters my mind—a potential rival for Jane's affections. The idea fills me with a gnawing dread, knowing that at any moment, I could lose her to someone more suited for her, someon of her station. The thought gnaws at me.

"Jane," I whisper her name into the cold night air, allowing it to carry the weight of my longing. But I must remain strong. For my kingdom, for my people, and for her. The world demands I marry someone of lineage, someone who can bear me heirs and strengthen alliances. Duty calls, and I must answer. But my heart…my heart belongs to Jane Pinkerton, the girl who has unknowingly ensnared a king.

I'll keep my distance, maintain a façade of indifference. It's the only way.

And as for Edward Langley…if he dares pursue her, he'll learn just how far I'm willing to go to protect what's mine. It’s selfish, I know. I might not can have her, but I’ll be damned if I let another have her either.

This castle may soon become a battleground. Let the games begin.

Jane

"Jane, do you have any plans after work today?" Edward's voice slides into my ears like silk, making a shiver run down my spine. I glance up from the pile of linens I'm folding, meeting his striking green eyes.

"Um, no. Why?" I ask, trying to sound casual while my heart races. Edward is known to be a charmer. I like him well enough as a friend, but that’s all, but I fear that lately he’s taken a romantic interest in me. I can’t help buy notice the way he looks at me, and let’s face it. Edward only talks to women he’s chasing.

And I refuse to be just another notch in his belt.

Besides, I have my mystery man, whoever he is. I blush at just the thought of him.

"Would you like to accompany me to the village tonight? There's a small festival going on, and I thought it might be fun for us to go together," he says, his disarming smile lighting up his face.
