But his eyes were on Liam now. “This could be your lucky day, Fetcher. This is a new alternative for revenge.”

“What do you mean?” Liam growled.

“Her life for yours.”

The fury blazing in Liam's eyes scared even me. I had never seen a man that red. I glanced from my mad cousin to the crazy man holding me close.

“Don't you dare, Rafail! Let her go, now!”

Rafail's lips curved to the most cynical smile. It held promises of pain and misery. He withdrew the gun. “I see you have already forgotten. You cannot tell me what I can or cannot do.”

His eyes fixed on me, blue melting into amber. “I won’t kill you, but she belongs to me now, she’s mine.”

“I swear I'm going to fucking kill you!” Liam shouted, about to launch an attack with his fists. But the other man was quicker, pointing his gun at him to keep him rooted in his tracks.

My heart skipped a beat and my breath caught. This was no bluff. This man was serious. “No.” I shook my head and a hot tear dripped down my cheek. “No. Let go of me!”

I beat my free hand against his chest, “Let go of me now!”

His posture was grounded, calm, and composed, as if nothing moved him, and his expression was stoic.

That was why I never saw the blow to the back of my head coming.

“Juliana!”

Liam's voice echoed in my head and black stars dotted my vision. I felt numb and my hand dropped to my side.

“Juliana!”

Slowly, very slowly, my head fell back, and my limp body sank into big, strong arms as the darkness engulfed me.

Chapter 6 – Rafail

“Kakie novosti?” What’s the update?

My footsteps echoed through the hallway as I walked up the walnut staircase while talking to Viktor on the phone.

“Liam and Ava are tied up cozy downstairs. I think I might have hit their heads too hard. They're out cold.”

I didn't put it past Viktor to do a little extra. He coughed and I heard feet shuffling, like he was moving away. A door closed and keys jingled in the background.

“Do we have anything to worry about?” I asked.

Silence settled before his heavy voice responded, “No, we're good. Liam and Juliana are orphans. They don't have any family or contacts that would be looking for them, except for her work, at the restaurant, but I’ll talk to Vaughn.”

“And what about the other girl?”

I could have sworn there was a moment of hesitation from Viktor's end before he cleared his throat. “The red-haired one? Oh, she has family. Middle-class, not important. We could fool them for a while with AI-generated texts and audio notes from the girl's phone.”

We both knew that wouldn't stop them for long before they went looking for their daughter, which could get us in trouble, but it would have to do for the meantime until I figured out how to use the situation to my advantage.

That reminded me of Viktor's oversight.

“I thought you ran a background check on the girl before, on Juliana?”

“I did,” he confirmed.

“Why did we not have Liam show up anywhere on her records?”
