“Hey, Alessia,” Ivanna said. “Our child is in the car with the nanny. Would you like the nanny to stay with the children, or are you fine handling them on your own?”

“Of course, I’d love to have them both with me,” I replied happily. “Your nanny can take the rest of the day off.”

“I thought so,” Ivanna said, calling the nanny upstairs.

The nanny came up shortly after and set the child down in the playpen. I set Mario in the playpen as well, and the two children ran to each other for an adorable hug.

“Well, that settles it,” Thale said. “Michael, it’s time.” They ushered him down the hall like a prisoner on death row, and Michael was graceful enough not to fight it.

“Go easy on him, guys!” I called as they stepped into the elevator. Thale looked out and winked at me, then shut the elevator doors.

I locked the door and walked over to the playpen. “Well, who wants to paint?”

“Me!” Thale’s child said excitedly.

I opened the playpen and led the children into the art studio Michael had built for me while he made other renovations. I set up the materials for each child, threw the drapes wide open to let in the sunlight streaming from the eastern sky, and then settled in front of my canvas, facing both children.

The first painting I did was of both children playing happily with paint. I beamed a contented smile and thought about my journey so far. I was grateful for the life I had, and there was nothing more in the world I could have asked for or desired.

The End
