“Hmm,” he said, his hazel eyes peering into my soul. “I don’t recall having asked you to dinner tonight.”

“You didn’t,” I smiled, “and I really have to get out of here.”

“Well, I am now,” he said. “You know I’ll be better company than any idiot trying to work their moves on you at dinner tonight.”

“Does it always have to turn into this between me and you?”

“No,” he simply said, his arm still up, creating a barrier between me and the exit of this office. “You’re the one who is trying to date other men because you think it’s unwise to date me.”

“I think we both decided it’s unwise if I date you, Doc,” I teased, folding my arms together and only allowing him to block my exit because, if I was honest, these interactions with John were the highlight of my day.

“I don’t think we ever had that discussion.”

“Hm,” I eyed him. “Well, we’re having it now. And if I remember correctly, it was you who said that you don’t date colleagues?”

“That’s correct,” he answered.

“So? We did have that conversation, then, because it’s clear on my end that I’m not going to date your handsome ass.”

“We’ve just talked simply about all that,” he said.

“As if it gets more complicated than that?”

He shrugged. “Historically, I don’t date colleagues, but I’ve recently made an exception to that rule.”

“Dear God,” I covered my heart, feigning shock. “Imagine all the people running around this place who have dreamt of the day you finally make this exception.”

“They’ll never know about it, gorgeous,” he said.

“Listen,” I glanced down at my watch, seeing how late I was, “I honestly have to go.”

“Date me,” he said as if it were any other day.

My eyes widened in response. “No,” I said with a smile. This was dangerous to fall for, and I had no time for heartbreak while working my residency.

“Why not?”

For the first time since meeting the guy, he seemed deadly serious.

Shit. He actually wanted more.

I mustered my sweetest voice and said, “I think you should just be happy that I still trust going on this hiking gig with you next week. Let’s leave it at friends, okay?”

His lips twisted in a way that showed me I had made myself a challenge for him to conquer. He was the easiest man to reject because he didn’t get his feelings hurt or upset; He just became more fun and exciting to be around, which was half the reason we were here, and he was making exceptions to his dating rules.

“Fine,” his eyebrow arched. “We’ll keep it as friends. Probably best that way, anyway.”

“Something tells me I shouldn’t believe you.”

He smiled, “And while you’re staring into that man’s eyes tonight, you won’t be able to stop thinking about how you wished you didn’t reject me…again.”

“The man’s eyes I’ll be staring into would likely kick your ass if he knew you were trying to steal me away from him,” I teased, knowing the only man’s eyes I’d be seeing tonight would be my dad’s.

“He wouldn’t be the first dumbass to try to kick my ass because of you,” I said.

“Well, that’s a solid fact,” I laughed, recalling the night we first met. “Well, this guy is extremely athletic and definitely would not approve of your advances.”

He rolled his eyes. “Extremely athletic?” he scoffed. “Sounds to me like you’re attracted to the douchebag types?”
