The kisses stopped, and we dressed silently, me giving her space and her lost in her thoughts.
Something was bothering her, but I wasn’t going to press it.
“Wanna watch a movie in bed?” I asked with a yawn, hoping she would know I wasn’t suggesting more sex.
Elizabeth nodded, her eyes half closing as she slid into the bed beside me. To my surprise, she took my hand, wrapping her hands around it before lifting it to her lips and kissing it lightly.
“I’m okay.”
“Why don’t I believe you?” I turned to her, searching her eyes as she blinked with surprise. “You can tell me anything.”
There it was again, the hesitation.
It had to be to do with today or last night.
AJ or Zeus.
Zeus would never hurt her, whereas AJ would.
I went with my gut.
“It’s AJ West, isn’t it?”
Elizabeth gasped, which turned into a groan as she shook her head.
“AJ West is a dick.”
I cocked my head to the side, surprised at the bitterness in her tone.I knew he was a dick, but up to yet, Elizabeth had been nothing short of respectful about him.
What has changed?
“What happened?” I asked, trying to keep calm.
“Please don’t react. Promise me.” Elizabeth looked up at me, and I saw fear in her eyes for the first time.
I grit my teeth, stroking my stubble as I stared at her.
“What did he do to you?”
My voice had changed, and Elizabeth shook her head, frowning at me.
“You haven’t answered me.”
Fucking hell.
“If he’s touched you in any way against your will—”
Elizabeth shook her head, and I relaxed a little, but that bastard had still upset her. I just knew it.
“Promise?” Elizabeth repeated, her lower lip quivering.
“I can’t guarantee that, Elizabeth. I already detest the prick, and now you’re about to tell me something he’s done to upset you? I won’t be able to promise you I won’t react.”
Her fingers laced with mine, and she tugged me toward her, her eyes falling immediately to my lips.
“Please.”
If all the women in the world collectively begged me for something, I’d still say no, but this goddess had power over me.
