“Excuse me,” Massimo said in a clear voice. There was no immediate response. There was no acknowledgment at all.

“Excuse me,” he said much more forcefully. He got one nurse's attention.

“Just a minute, sir. I’ll be right with you as soon as I can.”

“That’s not good enough,” Massimo interrupted, causing the nurse to pause her steps. “I need help now.”

She turned and moved in his direction. “How can I help you?”

“I need to know about my wife, Isotta Ricci.”

“Sir, we have an influx of new patients. I have to get back to you.”

“That won’t work for me,” Massimo replied. His brows were knocked together as he leaned in. “Take a moment and find out about my wife, please.”

Against her better judgment, the nurse checked the computer screen.

“Your wife is still in triage. The doctors will let you know how she's doing as soon as they can.”

“But that’s not good enough. I need to know how my wife is.”

The nurse had already walked away. Massimo was infuriated on top of being worried.

“Nurse!” He bellowed.

“We have to wait, Mr. Ricci,” Rosa said, walking up behind him. “We just have to wait.”

She reached for Massimo but stopped short. Rosa didn’t want to overstep her boundaries. He finally pushed away from the nurse’s desk. He remained frustrated.

“Vitals?” Dr. Salvadori Accardi, the emergency room attendant, asked.

“Her blood pressure is in the normal range, doctor, as is her temperature,” an emergency room nurse reported.

“And her EKG?” Dr. Accardi asked.

“Normal doctor,” another nurse reported out.

“Mrs. Ricci, I know you have had a lot of pain, but we’re going to give you something that can hopefully help with that,” the doctor advised. “I would like to ask you some questions. If you don’t feel like you can answer them with words, then nod your head yes or no, okay?”

Isotta managed to nod her head.

“Great,” the doctor replied. “How long have you been in pain? Can you show me with your fingers?”

Isotta managed to show him three fingers.

“Good,” he replied. “And do you experience this kind of pain with every menstrual cycle?”

She nodded.

Has this level of pain been the same since the beginning of your cycle?” He asked.

Isotta shook her head and then held up her fingers, which drew the doctor’s attention.

“For the past three years?”

She nodded again.

“Excellent,” Dr. Accardi replied. “And how would you rate your pain right now on a scale of one to ten, one being easy and ten being very painful?”
