I mentioned to Gray in a text that my dad had been ill, and he sweetly asked if there was anything he could do.

“Pity it’s not Alaska,” Darby goes on, referring to the conversation I told her about Gray.

I laugh. “I think he was being funny.”

“But he was in Nashville?”

“He’s getting a divorce. I didn’t like to pry.” I still haven’t gotten into it with him with everything going on.

“I’m sure you could fit in a trip once you’re settled. Find out if he’s still in Nashville, it would be awfully convenient.”

“Maybe. I just… I don’t want to start anything new knowing he’ll be leaving soon, too. It’s hard enough moving and dealing with my father being a stubborn old mule. I don’t need my heart broken into smithereens too.”

The thought of moving to another state is daunting, but it could be a good change for me. No woman in the history of our family has ever been to college and graduated with honors in law. I want to prove to my father I can do it.

“What’s maybe? That means you won’t,” Darby says.

“It means I need to get my shitstorm of a life on track. I got so many balls up in the air, I don’t know which way is up.”

“Maybe Gray’s balls might help some?”

I laugh. “Stop it!”

“You’re selfless,” she tells me, sobering quickly. There’s genuine concern in her eyes. “And I’m not going to cry.”

“Don’t you dare!” I tell her. “There will be time for tears later.” I give my friend a big hug.

“I’m going to miss you, Hart.”

“I’m going to miss you, too. But don’t worry, I’ll write,” I chuckle. “Every week, I promise.”

“You better,” she grumbles. “I know where you live, sort of.”

We finish clearing the apartment out in no time at all, ready to hand in the keys before my flight in two days.

It’s all so sudden and I’m apprehensive about everything.

Moving to a small town. Working at my dad’s firm and taking on his current cases. I wonder if there will be enough for me to do, though dad is always saying he’s busy.

I have a townhouse lined up, ready to move into. The furniture and my car will arrive in a few days, I hope. It's amazing how quickly things can be arranged on short notice.

I’ll live out of my suitcase until then and make do.

While I’m soaking the following night in Darby’s tub, I get a message from Gray.

Gray:

I can’t stop thinking about you

My heart flutters, and my core throbs seeing those words on the screen. It doesn’t take much for this man to make me gooey.

Me:

Me too. You’ve been on my mind since I left New York

Gray:

How are things?
