Me:

Also, dad showed up to work. He’s gonna be in the shitter with Linda

Darbs:

OMG, what?

Me:

I know. He’s unstoppable

Darbs:

Now I know where you get your work ethic from, geez

Me:

G2G my dad & Reg are waiting

Darbs:

Break a leg!

I quickly shoot a text to Linda, but she’s hopeless at responding.

Me:

Did you know dad showed up at the office this morning? Don’t worry. I’m bringing him home as soon as this meeting is over. Do we honestly need to organize a babysitter?

I wait a minute, but she hasn’t even read the message, so I slide my cell into my suit pocket. I’ll check again after the meeting, but I know Linda will be pissed. She will probably come straight down here to get him.

Picking up my notepad and pen, I make my way down to Regina’s office where I hear her talking to my dad. Everyone in the firm seems friendly enough. It’s only a small place with two other full-time lawyers, Regina Meyers, and a guy called Peter Lombardi. They have a receptionist, Tamara, who insists I call her Tam, and dad’s PA and legal secretary, Sammy. It’s a close-knit team where everyone seems to get along, so I feel like I’m going to fit in well here. At least, I hope so.

“Everything ok?” I ask them both as I stand in the doorway. They both look up at me, clearly discussing something to do with the case that doesn’t seem favorable.

At the same time, Tamara buzzes the intercom to inform us Grayson Bassett is here.

I don’t even have time to kick my dad out.

“We’ll meet Mr. Bassett in the boardroom,” Regina says through the receiver.

“I’ll grab my coffee,” I say quickly, realizing I left it in my office.

Dad stands, and Regina follows. I take the opportunity to remind him he’s not supposed to be here.

“Dad, I’m sorry, but I texted Linda. I’m worried about you. Should you even have driven yourself here?” I whisper-shout so as not embarrass him with Regina overhearing.

“I fail to see how sitting in a chair in the boardroom is going to be hazardous to my health,” he states. “It’s almost the same as being at home.”

My nostrils literally flair at his stubbornness. “I’m driving you home the minute the meeting ends,” I inform him. “Honestly, dad. I’ve no words for you. This is not what the doctor meant when he said to take it easy!” I’m so mad at him right now. The more I think about it, the madder I get.

“Let’s not be dramatic.”

“Do you not trust Regina and I to deal with your client?” I ask him in a hushed, but annoyed, tone.

“Hartley, that’s not it and you know it. You know I have a hard time letting go.”

I can’t believe he’s even admitting it.
