“Tough shit. If she wants to play dirty, the gloves are off. She’s the reason I’m holding off on selling my business, because if she hears anything about that, she’ll want a huge chunk of it.”

“Then we mustn’t give her any further ammunition.” I press my lips together in a firm line when he raises those pretty blues to mine. “I mean it, Gray, you can’t call her again.”

His eyes darken. “You tellin’ me what to do, gorgeous?”

“What if I am?”

He rubs his chin and adds amusingly. “And here I was thinking it was me calling the shots.”

I snort a laugh. “Uh, I’m the one who’s about to ride your ex’s ass, or should I say; her lawyer’s ass, all the way back to the rock he crawled out from.”

He purses his lips. “Ooh, I think I like the sounds of that.”

“You have no idea.” I smile, despite the situation.

“I’m glad you’re here,” he says, running a hand through his hair, growing serious for a moment. “I mean, not that dealing with my divorce is ideal, and your dad has done an amazing job this far, but to see you again…”

“I haven’t been myself since that night,” I confess.

He quizzes a brow. “That’s a good thing, I hope?”

“Yes, of course. But this is all so unexpected. My dad. Moving here so suddenly. Leaving my job…”

“I get it. I packed up my life recently too, it’s not for the faint hearted.”

“Does it get any easier?”

He shrugs. “I can’t honestly say, but I will tell you this; it feels different here. Less crazy. Nowhere near hectic, and maybe I’m having a midlife crisis, but I like the slower pace. My parents aren’t getting any younger. It’s another reason I wanted to be home. I miss my family.”

He’s such a sweetheart.

“Tell me about it. As much as they drive you insane, I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

He smirks. “So, Stoney Creek is growing on you?”

“Something like that.”

“I’m glad, because as soon as I sign on that dotted line, I’m coming for you.”

My eyes grow wide as I sputter my coffee mid-sip. “Holy shit,” I whisper.

He smirks again, enjoying himself as I reach for the napkins. “What would be sexy as fuck is you calling me Mr. Bassett while I…”

I reach over and put my hand over his mouth, trying not to laugh. I also glance around, but nobody is paying us any attention.

“Will you behave?” I whisper-shout.

He pouts. “You know, I’m known as a grump around these parts. People will start talking if they see me making you laugh.”

I shake my head. I’m screwed either way. “We couldn’t have that now, could we?” I remove my hand and straighten myself out.

This man wrecks me. And the best part is how effortlessly he does it.

I can’t help my shit-eating grin as I leave.
