I run over to Nick, grab him by the arm, and spin him till he’s facing me.

“Nick. Do not,” I snap.

“Do not what?” He scowls at me, tilts his beer back, and drains it. Yes, that is what he needs. More alcohol.

Rowan hurries over to me. “Damn it, Ruby. Get him out of here before he starts a fight.”

My face flushes red. This is so embarrassing.

“Nick, let’s go,” I say coldly.

“Screw that. She can’t tell me to leave.” He raises his voice, pointing at Rowan.

“It’s her apartment, so yes, she can.”

From across the room, Mason is moving towards us—very fast.

Pax beats him to it.

He appears by Nick’s side so fast, he must have teleported.

“Pax, Rowan, I’m sorry. Nick drank too much. He will apologize tomorrow, believe me,” I say, my face reddening with embarrassment.

“The hell I will,” Nick mutters, and staggers back a couple of steps.

Pax moves forward and looms over him. “Get the hell out of here, little boy, before you get a spanking. Believe me, you do not want to mess with me.”

Nick may be a drunken idiot, but fortunately he hasn’t drunk so much that he is unaware of the size difference between himself and Pax. Pax could floss his teeth with Nick.

“Fine. This party sucks anyway. I’m getting an Uber.” Nick storms out of the apartment. All of the guys applaud.

Pax shakes his head at me. “Nice,” he says, barely hiding a sneer. He stalks off, standing with his back to me and chatting with Beckett.

“What is up with everyone tonight?” I say to my sister. Mason is standing there, his arm around her shoulder.

“Well, number one, your boyfriend’s an asshole. Sorry, Ruby, but I call ’em like I see ’em.”

“He’s not my boyfriend exactly,” I wince. I can’t explain the situation to them, because then I’d have to admit that I was the dumbass who thought her college professor loved her and everything somehow went up in flames, and now I need a fake boyfriend, and I’d feel like an idiot and they’d both go into protective mode.

“Well, whatever he is, I’m afraid it’s not a great idea to invite him back here,” Rowan says, with a sympathetic smile.

“Believe me, I have no intention of inviting him back here ever. And I will talk to him, and he will apologize, if he wants his man parts to remain connected to his body. So, anyway, what’s up with Pax?”

“What do you think is up with Pax?” Mason arches an eyebrow.

“I have no idea. If I had a clue, I’d be delighted.”

Mason and Rowan look at each other and shake their heads.

What are they getting at?

“Well, if you’re going to tell me that Pax is secretly in love with me or something, then you can save your breath.” I snort in disgust. “He does not like me that way, but I thought we were friends, and he’s been an absolute tool to me ever since the game. Seriously, sometimes I think he blames me for losing.”

“Okay,” Mason shrugs.

“You’ll figure it out,” Rowan says to me.

“Oh, come on guys. We hung out for a while, he got pouty because he’s got some weird thing about football players and apparently now that I’m dating one I’m the enemy, and he can’t stand me.”
