“Well, Paxton Saul, I hear that you’re off the market.”

Wait, he’s dating someone? Why didn’t I know about this? And why do I feel like someone just kicked me in the stomach?

Oh no.

He can’t mean me.

Would it be worse if he’s really dating someone else, or if he lies and says he’s dating me? I suck in a deep breath.

“It’s true.” He nods. “Her name is Ruby.”

“Holy shiznit,” Clair shouts.

“Holy shit, even!” Kennedy adds. “This news is going to go worldwide! Paxton Saul is one of Manhattan’s most eligible billionaire bachelors!”

I pick up a pillow and throw it at the screen.

What the hell is he playing at?

Pax is nodding, and Tiana is entranced. She leans forward, flashing some cleavage at him. “We’ve known each other for a while now. We started out as friends, and then it changed to something different.” His face turns serious. He looks at the TV screen, and I feel as if he’s looking right at me, talking directly to me. He must know I’d end up seeing this. What he’s saying, just to me, is that we were friends, and then we weren’t. Then he breaks into a wide grin. “We’re totally in love.”

My jaw drops.

He did not just say that on television.

“Oh my goodness. I need more details. Exactly how serious is this?” Tiana trills. Still leaning forward. Still flirting with him while he’s talking about his alleged passion for me.

It does not make me feel the least bit stabby.

Paxton does not take the bait. He keeps his gaze firmly fixed on her face, I’ll give him that much. “Pretty serious. Serious as a heart attack, Tiana. I could see this one going the distance. However, out of respect for her, I do want to protect her privacy, so I’d rather not go into any more details. Other than to say, she’s really something else.” He looks at the screen again, smiling, but I can see the hint of malice in his eyes.

“That’s why she was blushing and looking so weird earlier,” Clair says to Kennedy. “She was thinking about his penis.”

Kennedy nods. “Well, obvi.”

Then she leans over and picks up a pencil from the coffee table. “The standard length of a pencil is 7.5 inches,” she says. “So, how does he compare to this pencil? Longer, shorter, the exact same?”

“Sure hope it’s thicker,” Clair says dryly. “Oh, look, she’s blushing again. This is fun.”

This is mortifying.

My purse vibrates as my phone starts ringing. It’s my sister, of course.

I grab my purse from the coffee table and hurry towards the door. “Start the movie. Don’t wait for me,” I call out.

“Wait! Come back!” Kennedy shouts.

“He, uh... wasn’t supposed to say anything. I need to have a talk with him. I wasn’t ready to go public,” I call back.

I run out the door and shut it behind me. The call goes to voicemail. That’s fine, because I’m not ready to speak to Rowan yet.

Instead, I call Paxton. He answers immediately.

“Hello, princess,” he says.

“Nope.”

“Gorgeous? Hotness? Sweetheart? Pudding pie? This relationship is so new, I’m trying to come up with our couple slang. We have to have a couple name, of course. Are we Raxton? Suby?”
