Maybe he didn’t make a move for the same reasons I didn’t—he didn’t want to start something and then risk having it go up in flames since I’m Rowan’s sister.

The way he’s looking at me now—staring, with a warm intensity—makes me feel so desired.

I’m about to melt into his arms when I catch a glimpse of my nemesis in the crowd, dancing with Becca.

Prick Fuckman, of course.

I make a face and Paxton glances behind me to see Nick and Becca entwined and making out. More than making out. I’m genuinely worried that Becca’s going to swallow Nick’s tongue, and then what will he use to lie with?

I shake my head in disgust. Well, that was a mood killer.

“Ignore them.” Paxton shrugs. “As far as the world knows, you’re dating a hot hockey player, and he’s just playing at college sports, and he’s about to get his ass kicked off the team. You’re the winner here, not him. Let’s put on a show.”

A Rihanna song comes on, and I do my best to ignore Nick and Becca and just focus on Paxton.

Rowan spots him too, though, and she catches my eye and crosses her eyes and sticks out her tongue, making me laugh. Then she sticks her finger in her mouth, making a gagging motion.

“I thought this club was exclusive!” she calls out to me. “I guess they let just anyone in here!”

Paxton grabs me and pulls me up against him, and now our groins are pressed together. A slow song comes on and he moves me across the dance floor, staring down into my eyes. I tip my head back up and melt into him, and my entire body is pulsing with arousal. From what I can feel of him, he shares the sentiment.

Girls are staring at me with envy. One of them actually comes up and taps Paxton on the arm.

“Want to dance with me?” she trills.

“I’m here with my girlfriend!” He maneuvers so he’s standing with his back to her.

She stands there pouting. “So... that’s a no?” He keeps ignoring her until she wanders off.

At the end of the song, I feel a tapping on my shoulder.

I turn around, and of course it’s Nick. Becca’s standing at the edge of the dance floor, sneering at me and holding a drink.

“What? No, I don’t want to dance, idiot,” I say coolly.

“What, you’d rather dance with your fake boyfriend?” He laughs. “I call bullshit, Ruby. This isn’t any more real than you and me were. Although it looks like he’s got a much better chance of getting some ass than I did.”

“So sorry about your ego, Nick,” I scoff.

“What about the professor? Was that fake too? Since you had the code to his garage, I feel like it wasn’t.”

All of a sudden, he’s surrounded. Mason, Pax, Knox, Logan, and Noah are forming a very large semi-circle around him.

Nick sneers at me. “Got your bodyguards here to protect you. Can’t fight your own battles, huh?”

“Oh, I definitely can.” I smile merrily at Pax and his teammates. “Hold on, I’ll be right back.”

I turn and scurry over to Becca. “Becca, hey! So glad you’re here! I just want to tell you how much I admire you,” I call out to her.

She stares at me in bafflement. “You do?”

“Yes! I mean, even with Nick definitely being off the team, even with him not being a football player anymore, you’re still with him? That shows true character!”

“He what?” she demands, her voice shrill with outrage. “He told me that he was going to get back on the team. He said his parents will fix everything!”

I give her a sympathetic smile. “Yeah, but does that surprise you? I mean, after what he pulled at the professor’s house, you already know he’s a liar.”

“He just did that to protect me,” she protests.
