Page 97 of That Geeky Feeling

He pulls me hard against him, his mouth back on mine, eager and needy.

Too impatient to undo all of his shirt, I switch my attention to his belt.

“I’ve never wanted anything as much as I want you,” he whispers. “And I’ve never wanted you as much as I do this moment.”

He slides his hand lower under my butt and pushes a finger inside my slick entrance.

I groan and bear down on him, wanting as much of him as possible. At the same time, I slip inside his linen pants and take his twitching dick in both hands.

“What the fuck?” asks a voice that’s neither mine nor Elliot’s.

Elliot’s mouth is suddenly off mine, but lost in the fog of lust, I have no idea what’s going on.

“Max?” Elliot says.

And in the blink of an eye, I’m back to reality, my vision sharp.

There’s Max. With his hands over his eyes.

He’s seen us—me—pressed against a tree, Elliot’s finger inside me, my hands in Elliot’s pants, and one breast hanging out of my dress.

Ipush my boob back inside my dress almost as quickly as Elliot pulls his finger out of me and zips his pants.

“What the ever-loving fuck?” Max turns his back so he can uncover his eyes.

“What the hell are you doing creeping around the woods spying on people?” Elliot asks, fumbling with his belt.

If all the other current circumstances weren’t so mortifyingly and catastrophically horrific, I’d be jolted by this being the first time I’ve ever heard Elliot raise his voice.

“I was neither creeping, nor spying,” Max says. “Is it safe to turn around yet or will my eyes start bleeding?”

I adjust the straps of my dress with shaking fingers.

“Turn around, fuck off, do the chicken dance, whichever you prefer,” Elliot says.

Max spins to face us. He flicks back the sides of his jacket and presses his fists against his waist, his eyes burning with a weird combination of fury and sadness.

My brain spins inside my skull, hitting a downward spiral of despair. This is it. This is the end of everything for me. The end of all my hopes at work.

My heart pounds, but now for an entirely different reason than it was a minute ago. I have to salvage this. Somehow I have to fix it, make it right.

“Max, let me explain.” I run my fingers through the back of my hair to untangle it and find a bit of bark stuck in there.

He ignores me and stays focused on Elliot. “What actually happened is that I saw you guys head this way and thought I’d take the opportunity of a quiet moment to tell Charlotte about the promotion I have planned for her. But it looks like you already had something else planned.”

I step toward Max, my hands up in an almost surrender position. “Max, please.”

Mid-step, my back foot flies out of my shoe. The heel must have gotten stuck. I grab onto the tree for balance but stumble, and my bare foot lands on a spiky twig.

“Argh!” A searing pain shoots through my foot and up my leg. “Shit. Argh!”

I clutch my foot, steadying myself on the tree with the other hand.

“Christ, are you okay?” Elliot asks, his shirt still flapping open at the bottom where I undid his buttons.
