“I’m a lot closer than you think,” he said. “I don’t like to be threatened, Jamie. You made a big mistake.”

“You’re the one that made the mistake! I’ll ruin you! I’ll sue!”

“No. No, you won’t,” he chuckled. “You know why you won’t? Because you probably won’t live to sue me or anyone else ever again.”

“Wait, wait, I have information. I’ll give you the information!” she cried.

“We already know that you told those men nothing, and they were looking for Imron. It doesn’t matter any longer. We don’t need him, and we don’t need you.”

“Wh-where am I? Turn the lights on,” she begged.

“Still afraid of the dark, are you? Still dreaming of snakes climbing the walls? You know what it’s like here in the bayou, Jamie. Snakes like the water. They slither around, waiting to crawl all over you. Waiting to bite you.”

“No! Please, no!”

“Shut up! We’ll check on you later.” The speaker went dead, and Jamie immediately began to scream. Within an hour, she was so hoarse you could barely hear her cries.

“Don’t you think that’s enough?” asked the younger man.

“Nope. She needs to learn a lesson about who to fuck with and who not to fuck with. Release the snake.”

“But…”

“Do it!”

He nodded, opening the small cage remotely, watching on the camera as the small garden snake slithered out. It wasn’t poisonous. Didn’t even bite. But the moment she felt it, she would be drawn so far into her fears and nightmares she might never come back out.

When the screaming began again, the older man just smiled, watching the screen. All of their equipment allowed them to see the subjects in the dark.

“Leave it for another hour,” he said. The young man nodded.

“What about her?” he said, pointing to the room with Christina. The man’s face soured, pissed that so far, she’d held them off.

“What’s her other fear?”

“None that we’ve found.”

“Let me think on it for a while. Where is Spire? Is he still out there?”

“Yes. He’s done three today, so we should be able to get a few more subjects in here. These ones are getting stale.”

“Release all of them except Jamie and Christina. I’m going to break them no matter what.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Whiskey and Callan walked the long stretch of road that had three tattoo parlors. The first one was no help at all, so they moved on, walking toward the second.

“We’ll find him, Callan. We’re gonna help him get back on his feet,” said Whiskey.

“I know. I’m just sick about this whole thing. You’ve been doing this longer than me, Whiskey, but don’t you get tired of people shitting on their fellow man? Don’t you get pissed off when people use others to get what they want?”

“More than you can possibly imagine,” said Whiskey. “You’re right. I’ve been doing this a long time, Callan. The things I’ve seen, the things I wish I hadn’t seen, would fill ten books. It makes me incredibly sad and concerned for our world.”

“We can’t even blame this woman’s behavior on her parents. It sounds like they tried and were good people. This is someone who went bad all on her own.”

“It happens, Callan. You know that. Hell, we’ve all known guys that we served with that went black when they got out. Turned from good dudes to complete assholes overnight. Sometimes, they were that way in service; we just didn’t see it.”

“Yeah, I guess,” he nodded, pointing up to the sign. “This is the second shop. Incredible Ink. I don’t know this guy personally, but I hear his work is good.”
