“That wasn’t bad,” smirked Gaspar. “You’re getting better. You just might become an explosives expert by the time you reach a hundred.” Miller frowned at his brother, flipping him the bird.

“Bite me.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

“How are the animals?” asked Nine three days later, finally able to get out to the veterinary center.

“Doing better than expected,” said Sniff. “The farm animals have been fostered out to a farm in Lake Charles. They seem to be all right, so maybe they were taken recently. The dogs and cats are good for the most part, although some of them are frightened by things they normally wouldn’t be. We’re watching the coyotes. We can’t let them back in the wild until we’re certain they won’t become feral.”

“Kids. Animals. This whole thing makes me sick,” said Gaspar, shaking his head.

“Well, get ready for this one. Sven, George, and Teddy went to check out an illegal puppy mill. Someone sent us a request to look into puppies that were being sold to pet stores illegally. Many were ill or had sores on them.”

“What the fuck is wrong with people?” asked Nine.

“I don’t know. You got a few hours?” smirked Sniff.

“No, but thanks, brother. Come on. It’s time for another wedding.”

Weddings were the norm at Belle Fleur. If Mama Irene couldn’t plan a wedding, she was planning a party with everyone else. She’d developed proteges, followers, trainees, whatever you wanted to call them, and they were loyal as the day is long.

Her party planning skills should have been put in a book.

When the wedding kicked off in full swing, it was food, fun, dancing, and family time. Usually, no business was discussed. But when Sven, George, and Teddy arrived late with expressions of anger and frustration on their faces, Nine and the others knew something was seriously wrong.

“You guys good?” asked Miller.

“Nope. Who wants to kill a few people?”
