“I’ll be fine.” I reach him and look up into stormy eyes.

His hand cups my cheek. “You shouldn’t be so trusting of me,cara mia.”

A sliver of fear slides down my spine, but I try to hide it. For some reason, I feel like if I show fear, it will upset him. Like he needs my trust.

“You won’t hurt me.” I tilt my head and kiss his palm. He jerks it away like I’d burned him.

“Come with me.” He strides out of the room, and I go to follow.

Lucia scrambles from the bed to follow me, but as we exit, another man steps into the doorway.

“Three’s company,” he says to her. He pushes her into the room and shuts the door.

“Let me out. Elena!” She pounds on the door.

“It’s okay,” I call back. Then I hope she stops because while I don’t believe Niko plans to hurt me physically, I can’t be sure he won’t hurt her.

He leads me to the next room, the one I remember Rosa telling me was his room. He tugs me through the door and slams it.

“Strip.”

I sigh. It’s not that I don’t want to have sex, but I hoped for something more. I hoped he might have missed me. Maybe we’d have a sweet moment, and I could tell him about the babies. But looking at him, I see no tenderness. No sweetness. Just tortured need.

He goes to a closet. Opening it, he comes out with a bottle of something potent.

“You have a bar in your room?” I ask as I pull my night shirt off.

“Saves me time going downstairs.” He takes a swig and then sets the bottle down and unbuttons his shirt. As he takes it off, he turns his back and I see a bandage.

“Niko? What happened?” I rush over to him, but he moves away.

“Your fiancé tried to set me up.”

“Fiancé? Romeo? Really?” Was Romeo that stupid? “Why?” I wonder if this is about Kate.

“He wanted to exchange your friend for you.” His eyes bore down on me. “That would never happen, Elena.”

My heart drops. “So… you just left her with him?” I move away from him, reminded of the monster he can be.

His hand grabs my wrist and pulls me toward him. “Don’t ever shirk away from me. There’s something that you need to hear. You’re mine now.”

My eyes close, realizing that I’m still just a commodity. I tug my hand away. “I understand that.”

He lets me go as he takes another drink from his bottle. “She’s safe. Liam was able to find her.”

“He’s the FBI man?”

He nods.

Relief floods me. I wish I could go to her, at the very least call her and apologize, make sure she’s okay, but I know that’s impossible.

“Get in bed,” he commands as he undoes his belt.

Dutifully, I pull the sheets down and get into bed. He doesn’t waste any time. He’s over me, his large body pressing me into the bed. There’s a part of me that wants to resist. Another is fascinated by the way he seems possessed by his desire for me.

“This is your room from now on, do you understand?”

“With you?”
