“I assure you that I am not mocking you at all, Ms. Tinley.”

“It doesn’t sound like it,” she muttered under her breath, and every word out of her mouth just kept pulling me in deeper. Posie Tinley was unpredictable, and I found that fascinating.

Getting back to the real reason that I pulled her over for some privacy, I said, “I’d like to ask you something else.”

The woman started to roll her eyes, but then caught herself. “Sure, Mr. Warrick.”

“What are your personal opinions of me?”

Her face turned pink again.

“Uh…what?”

I stepped closer to her, practically crowding her. “I noticed that you didn’t answer any of Laurie’s questions, so that has me curious,” I said, my voice low and deep. “Have you ever wondered what I was like in bed?” Those brown eyes of hers widened again. “Do you find me attractive?” Posie’s eyes started darting around again. “Have you ever thought about me late at night, alone in your bed?”

Her eyes shot back my way. “What makes you think that I sleep alone?” she challenged.

“Do you?” I asked, ready to take whatever complaint she was bound to file with H.R. and be done with it.

Something flashed in her eyes, and I hated not being able to let her know that I knew about what had happened to her. I also hated that all her assailants were dead. I would have loved to have torn them apart.

Whatever Posie was thinking, she opted for honesty. “Yes,” she answered.

“That’s good to know.”

“Do you?” she countered, and the feistier that she became, the more grateful I felt that those sonsofbitches hadn’t won.

“I do,” I assured her. “However, lately, I’m discovering that I might like to change that.”

Her face turned pink again.

“Like I told Laurie, not my business,” she mumbled.

I crowded her a little more. “I think that it is,” I told her.

“Mr. War-”

“Ms. Tinley?”

“Yeah?” she choked out as my hand reached up to tuck a wayward strand of hair behind her ear.

“Like I stated before, I know all about California’s labor laws, so let’s just skip the lecture on inappropriateness, legalities, moralities, ethics, harassment, and whatever else is running through your head right now,” I said. “I’m willing to risk it if you are.”

Her head reared back in shock, and I could hardly blame the woman. I was breaking all kinds of laws right now, so I wouldn’t blame her if she took off running. Whether she was attracted to me or not, this was crossing a line that could lead to all kinds of trouble.

Still, I didn’t care.

I’d read that file, knew what had been done to her, and knowing that she had chosen to fight for her life back, rather than retreat into a pit of darkness, had me not giving a fuck about labor laws.

“Let me know what you decide,” I told her as I walked off, leaving her to make up her mind.

Chapter 15

Posie~

The rest of the day had been spent with my mind spinning and it still was. After Killian had dropped that bombshell on me earlier, I hadn’t been able to go back to the phones. There was no way that I would have been able to give my callers the attention that they would have needed, not with being as distracted as I’d been.

So, instead of doing my job, I had ended up spending the rest of the day completing my monthly metric summaries. Once a month, we were required to summarize all our calls for statistical reasons. Birdwing wanted to know how many calls were for actual help, venting, from the abused, or from a family member, etc. While we had a program that tracked all of that, it was our responsibility to format the information into a monthly report with our personal notations on what we thought about some of the calls.
