“Fated mate,”she says, her face going blank.
“Yes.”
She blinks at me, and for a moment, I wonder if maybe I should have at least gotten her name before I told her about all of this. My wolf paws at me, warning me not to mess this up.
I stand, fussing with the blanket and tucking her in more.
“Um…”
“What’s your name?” I ask, and she blinks, seeming to get whiplash from this conversation.
“Elle.”
“Elle,” I say, trying her name out.
I like the way it sounds and how it rolls off my tongue. My wolf licks his lips in agreement, and I clear my throat before she can notice the hard-on that I’m getting.
“I’m a shifter,” I tell her, sitting back down in my chair.
Her mouth drops open, and I pause. She doesn’t look confused by that, and I wonder if I made a mistake. Did I misssomething? I could have sworn that my mate was human and not a shifter like me…
“A shifter? What kind?” She asks, and now it’s my turn to blink in surprise.
I take another deep breath, but all I can smell is her sweet scent.
“Wolf. Are you… You’re not a shifter,” I state, and she shakes her head.
“No, but I write about them.”
“What?”
“I’m a romance author. My best friend and I write shifter romance books. I just… I always thought that it was just fiction. A fantasy, you know?”
“You’ve written dirty romance books?” I ask, my erection straining against my jeans.
My wolf is howling inside of me, and I try to tune him out as I focus on Elle.
“Yeah,” she says distractedly, and I can almost see the wheels turning in her head.
“Could you be more specific?” I ask, and she shakes her head, focusing on me.
“What? Oh, no!” She chides me, her cheeks blushing.
Fuck, I’ve got to get my hands on her books.
“So, you already know about shifters and fated mates then,” I clarify, and she chews on her bottom lip.
“I mean, maybe? Everything that I’ve read or written, I always thought was fake. You can change between human and wolf?”
“Right.”
“And it doesn’t hurt to shift?”
“Nope.”
“And you’re part of a pack?”
