“You’re sorry? That’s all you have to say? You’re sorry. I asked you to look out for her, making sure no one tried anything…You knew how innocent she is.Was. You took advantage of her.”

He hit me again, and this time, I leaned into his fist. I wanted the beating, I needed it. I deserved it.

“I didn’t take advantage. She wanted me, too, Ash. She wants me back,” I told him.

The words only seemed to make him more angry. He hit me again. A punishment for speaking the truth.

“Fight back, you fucker,” Asher demanded.

I staggered against the railing and held on to catch my breath.

I shook my head, spitting a long line of blood to the ground.

“Fight back, or I’ll put you in the fucking hospital, Beckett!” Asher roared.

“Put me there. I don’t care, I’m not hitting you.”

“That won’t stop me – don’t think that’ll buy you mercy.”

He punched me in the gut, and I went down on one knee, winded.

“You don’t deserve mercy.”

“I don’t want it. I’m not hitting you, Ash, not for any reason.”

Asher paced in front of me, his angry breath puffing in white clouds in the cold night air, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides.

“Here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to fix her housing, because we both know you could have pulled those strings immediately but chose not to, and then you’re never going to speak to her again. You and me? We’re done, too.”

I spit out a mouthful of blood. “No.”

Asher stopped. “What did you just say?”

“I said no. I can’t do that.”

He crouched before me. “Are you fucking insane? Do you want to die tonight?”

A twisted chuckle left me. “Funnily enough, no – I don’t, and that’s the first time I can answer that honestly in years.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“I won’t apologize for loving her. I’ll never apologize for it, and I won’t regret a second of it.”

Asher reared back, fury emanating from him. “You’re still bullshitting? Say you love my sister again, I fucking dare you.”

I looked him dead in the eye, blinking past the blood flowing from my split eyebrow. “I love her. I’ll only ever love her, and I’ll die loving her.”

Asher stared at me for a long moment and then jerked forward, hauling me up and pressing me against the metal rail at the side of the stairs, slamming his forearm across my throat. He pushed hard, cutting off my air supply.

“You’re a psychopath, you know that? Even now, you’re still going with this…This ridiculousness is fucking done, Beckett. I know your dad’s rules for dating. I know you can’t have anything real with Eve. Stop messing with her, or I really will kill you.”

He let go just as spots danced before my eyes.

I sagged forward dizzily. “No.” The quiet word shattered the still night.

“No?No?” Asher repeated incredulously. “You really do want to die.”

I shook my head. “No. I really don’t. I want to live, and I want to live with her. If you have a problem with that, you really do need to kill me, because that’s the only way you’ll keep me from her.”
