“What more can I say, Beckett? I’m ashamed of myself.”

I pushed the chair back. I couldn’t hear anymore right now. It was all too much.

“I have to go – I have to see Eve.”

My dad half stood as I made to leave. “You and the Martino girl – is there something going on? Something serious, I mean.”

I paused on my way out of the room. “Why? You want to remind me of your policy not to date local girls or warn me not to mess around with the cleaner’s daughter?”

Soren shook his head slowly. “No. I’m not going to say anything against that girl. I can’t.”

I nodded. “That’s right. You can’t. Soon, she’ll be your daughter-in-law. Get used to that fact.”

I headed out and felt my father’s desperate gaze on me the whole way.

I took a deep breath before stepping out of the room. “I’ll come visit Cliff Point, once Colette’s gone. We can see each other then.” I didn’t turn around. I couldn’t meet his hopeful gaze. Things were far from fixed between us, but he’d taken the first step in my direction, and I wouldn’t leave him hanging.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

“Lily, I get that you’re mad at me, but I just want to know where Eve is…I just want to talk to her.” I tried my best to keep my cool, even though I was rapidly losing it.

Lily stood in the doorway to her room, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her eyes narrowed. “I think the time for talking has passed. It’s too late.” She made to close the door.

I stuck my foot into the gap to stop her.

“It’s not passed…Eve did something for me … something special, something brave. She did it because it’s not too late. When it comes to me and her, it’ll never be too late.”

Lily rolled her eyes. “It’s easy to talk big and make sweeping declarations to me.”

“I’d like to make them to Eve, but she won’t answer my calls.”

“I can’t blame her. If I were her, I’d never speak to you again.”

“And yet you took your boyfriend back after much worse,” I pointed out.

“I think the ‘much worse’ statement is debatable,” Cayden called from inside Lily’s room.

Great, she was never going to tell me where I could find Eve.

“I lost my shit and overreacted. I fell into old patterns and pushed her away, which was wrong, but not unforgivable…Eve will forgive me, and you’ll feel like shit for giving me the runaround.”

“I don’t think I will.” Lily smiled and started to close the door. “See you, Beckett.”

“Cade – help me out,” I beseeched my friend.

“Not my call, man,” drifted back to me through the gap, before Lily shut me out.

Great. I had no leads. After talking to my dad, I’d started searching for Eve. She wasn’t at either of her jobs or at Lily’s. I’d checked the library and even tracked down someone on the Ice Girls team.

I headed back to the Hellions’ dorm, determined to get my keys so I could drive around and keep looking for her.

I ran into Chase in the hall.

“You haven’t seen Eve, have you?” I asked the newest Hellion recruit.

He smirked. “Lost her already, have you? Called it.”

“You called what?” I asked, anger scorching through me.
