“Oh really? Judging by the last game the Hellions played, you’re very much needed,” I quipped, drawing a few groans from around the room.

“Eve, be nice…catch more flies with honey and all that,” Marcus complained.

“Play better if you want compliments.”

“Ouch! I’m glad to say I haven’t played yet for the team, so I am exempt from this roasting,” Chase pointed out.

“Like you’ll change anything,” Cayden muttered and shot an irritated expression at Chase.

“I guess you better hope I do, because the Hellions aren’t going to win anything the way you’re going,” Chase stated flatly and held his hand out for a low five from me.

I slapped his hand, relaxing into the banter of the guys. If only my brother were here, everything would be perfect. Well, nearly perfect. I’d happily trade a certain one of the guys in the room for Asher.

As if my thoughts had called to him, Beckett wandered into the kitchen and took up the place beside me at the breakfast bar.

“You’ve a lot of opinions about the team today, Cinderella. I’d like to see you do better.”

“I’m a good skater, I’ll have you know,” I sniffed, my skin prickling at the awareness of Beckett’s proximity. His side was pressing into mine, and that side of my body was on fire.

“Hmm, I know.”

“You do?” I was surprised by that admission.

I glanced up at Beckett. He was watching Lily and Cayden moving around the kitchen, but it felt like his attention was on me, regardless.

“Just because you were Asher’s annoying troublemaker of a sister doesn’t mean I didn’t notice you, Tiny.”

Was that an insult or a compliment? I had no idea.

“Okay!” Lily announced. “I think dinner is ready!”

“Great, I’m starved. We all need to carb up if we’re going to hit that party later, the one over at the Madison building.”

“A party?” I questioned and grabbed a place at the table. I tried not to be aware of where Beckett was sitting. It was difficult. He had etched himself into my consciousness, and I couldn’t get him out.

“Yes, a party. It’s Thursday night. We’re all going – no exceptions,” Marcus continued.

I checked in with Lily. She smiled and shrugged, agreeing in her own way. If Lily was going, so was I. Beckett couldn’t stop me in front of everyone.

It looked like Marcus was right. We were going to a party.

The party was at the dorm for the football players. While football was important at HHU, it wasn’t in the same league as hockey, so the football dorm was noticeably less nice. Still, the party was wild by the time we got there.

The lawn around the building was strewn with red cups and people, some unconscious, some making out, some vomiting in the bushes.

“Lovely,” I muttered as we stepped in.

“Right? It has a last days of Rome feel, doesn’t it?” Lily replied under her breath. She turned to her boyfriend. “Eve and I are going to explore. Find me later.”

Cayden narrowed his eyes at her, no doubt questioning the wisdom of letting his beautiful girlfriend out his sight at a football player rager, but Lily didn’t wait for his permission. She took my hand, kissed him on the cheek, and pulled me into the crowd.

We walked through the packed communal area, where chairs and tables had been pushed aside to make a dance floor that was now heaving with bodies. We squeezed through and ended up in the kitchen, where the music was marginally quieter.

“So, what the hell is going on with you and Beckett?”

“What?” I evaded her blunt question. I wished I knew. I really didn’t have an answer for her. I reached for a soft drink, thirsty as hell.

“Don’t give me that. You kissed?”
