“Hello, beautiful. I’ve never seen you here before,” an unfamiliar voice said in my ear.

I stepped forward to get away from those over-friendly hands. “Yeah, it’s my first time.”

“Is that right? Should we dance a little?”

I opened my mouth to turn the stranger down, just as another voice cut in. “She can’t. She’s already promised this one to me.”

Beckett stepped between me and the random guy, somehow managing to make him and his touch disappear behind him in seconds. I guess when you see someone like Beckett muscling in, you get out of the way.

He pulled me closer and rested his hands on my hips. His palms were so big, they made me feel small. A feeling I only ever had around him. It wasn’t horrible.

“Breaking the rules again? You really suck at being good, don’t you?” he leaned down to speak in my ear.

My skin tingled from his hot breath. “I only follow the rules of people who have power over me.”

“Like your mom’s employer?” he reminded me with a smirk that set my teeth on edge.

“You wanted me to sit at the apartment and not come to the party, when we were all coming here?”

Someone bumped into my back hard, and I fell into Beckett, pressing against his body. He glared over my shoulder at the passing football player before returning his gaze to me.

“I want you to understand that there are consequences to pushing my boundaries. That’s what I want.”

“Right. Consequences to the rules you dreamed up to torture me with…like what? Getting my mom fired so I suffocate you in your sleep?”

“Getting your mom fired isn’t the only punishment I have up my sleeve, Cinderella. In the hot tub, I warned you I’d spank you and fuck you in this perfect peach of an ass if you didn’t follow my rules.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re all talk. I’m not scared of you, Beckett.”

We moved against each other; we had no way to avoid it, given the way the crowd was squeezing us together. His body was strong and hard as hell against mine, and I could smell his unique scent, even over the generally disgusting sweaty smell of so many drunk people in a tight space. Every time someone jostled us, my head nestled on his pec, and his lips touched the top of my head.

I put my hands on his waist to steady myself.Damn.He was thick through and through. I knew that without a shirt, he wasperfectly proportional to his height, with slabs of muscle lying in beautiful blocks down his abdomen. I might have spent far too long remembering that picture of ideal male strength.

“You almost sound like you want me to prove you wrong, Tiny.”

“Why would I want that?” I scoffed. My cheeks were feeling hot and my skin tight.

He was gazing down at me, studying me. He saw all of me, every single part. There was nowhere to hide from the guy who I’d told my deepest, darkest secrets to.

Beckett didn’t respond for a long moment and then shrugged. “Let’s get out of here. I’ll tell you at home.”

I swallowed the knot of confused excitement in my throat. “Oh, will you really?”

Beckett had never gone to New York. Colette had lied to me. Maybe it was time to find out the truth for myself.

“Sure, let’s go.”

Beckett

Our room was blissfullyquiet when we got home. It was kind of cozy when Eve put on a desk lamp and closed the curtains. I’d shed my jacket and boots by the door, and now, I perched on the edge of the bed and watched her.

She was moving around nervously. Tidying her desk, pulling on warm socks, tying her hair up.

“You know your scar?” she suddenly asked.

My mood soured. “What about it?”

“Where were you treated?” She sat on her bed, ten feet away, mirroring my pose.
