“Yeah, this is going to go well…” Belle said sarcastically. “Can we get a couple bottles of water, too?” she asked and handed the bartender her credit card. “I’ll run a tab if that’s okay.”

“Sure,” he said. “Let me swipe this, and I’ll get it back to you.” He turned around.

“Another one,” Chandler said.

“What?” Belle asked, laughing a little.

“I want another shot. Can I do something else this time? Rum, maybe?”

“You want a shot of rum now?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. If that’s what you want… But after that, we’re sitting down and ordering food.”

“You can order here and sit down. I’ll have someone bring it out to you,” the bartender told them, giving Belle her card back.

“What do you want to eat?” she asked Chandler.

“Whatever you’re having is fine.” Chandler downed the shot of rum the bartender set in front of her.

“Drink that.” Belle pointed to one of the bottles of water he’d also placed there.

“Fine.”

Belle’s night out away from everything had somehow turned into a night of babysitting a soon-to-be-drunk Chandler, but as they sat down at a table and snacked on the nachos that Chandler had insisted on ordering as an appetizer until their burgers and fries arrived, she didn’t mind at all. Chandler was funny when she was tipsy. She was also a messy eater.

“You have congealed cheese on your chin.” Belle reached forward and pulled it off, but before she could put it into a napkin, Chandler’s tongue was out of her mouth and on that piece of cheese that she then ate.

Belle swallowed and took a drink of her one and only beer, while Chandler was on her third drink already.

“Do you want to dance?” Chandler asked later, after they’d finished their nachos but before their burgers had arrived.

“What?”

“Dance? Want to?”

“We have food on the way.”

“We can eat it when we’re done. One song. Come on.”

“Chandler, let’s eat first. You had, like, six chips. You haven’t eaten enough to help with that alcohol you practically chugged.”

“That’s a terrible word.” Chandler stood up from the stool. “Chug. Who made it up?”

“I have no idea.”

“Well, I want to dance. So, if you want to sit here and wait for our food, you can, but I’m going out there.” She pointed behind her and looked like she was about to tip over when she did.

“Okay.” Belle stood quickly and reached for her hand. “Dancing it is. Let me tell the bartender where we’ll be, okay?”

“I haven’t been dancing in forever!”

“Stay here.” Belle pointed to the floor between their feet. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay.”

Belle walked to the bar and asked if they could make their burgers to-go and keep them in the back because she had a feeling that Chandler was about to dance and then, pass out on the way home. They could eat them there if Chandler was still hungry. Belle was fine from her burrito and the few nachos she’d had. She’d left her beer on the table, so she wouldn’t be drinking it anymore, but it was almost gone anyway. They’d also finished their waters already, so the only thing she needed was Chandler and to make sure Chandler had her purse. She turned to the table to make sure she hadn’t left it and found no purse, but also no Chandler.
