“I’m so sorry, luv. I don’t know what is about to happen, but I have his word he won’t touch you. ‘Twas the best I could do. Rest assured I will do what I can if needs be, but for now I need to strap you in. Please be calm. If what I fear is to come actually comes to pass, your new friend is going to need all of your strength, bravery, and steely determination. Show him how strong you are. How strong he is, too.”

“Why’d you make him promise something so stupid, Ballzy? I was so looking forward to some up close and personal time with your little friend.” Her wink was sassy, though she felt some trepidation. What was Raum up to? As long as he entered her cell she would be happy. But what if he didn’t? Her powers weren’t strong enough to cut through the special, magic-proof glass. Trusting Balthazar was something she hadn’t expected at all. To have to put so much faith in him so suddenly was testing her nerves.

“Don’t forget the waist.” The sound of Raum’s voice drew her from her introspection, and she realized both of her ankles were already bound firmly. The belt at her waist was pulled so tight she sucked in an involuntary breath.

“Good, wouldn’t want the little bitch to be too comfortable. Oh, and just so you know, you worthless little cunt, these bindings are warded against magic from shifters, witches, and even angels.” She eyed him defiantly until he turned his attention back to Ballzy.

“You know what that means? I can see you now, isn’t that nice?” The fucker sounded way too fucking satisfied. Fuck! Her illusion was gone, and with it her tolerance for the pain to come.

“Move her to face me completely, about two feet away from the glass. I want her to have an unobstructed view of the consequences of keeping secrets, and hiding things from us.”

Sure enough, she found herself staring straight into the most entrancing eyes she’d ever seen. Green flecked eyes of gold, like mountains of golden treasure and emeralds. She locked eyes with him and grabbed hold of the tether within her. Though she didn’t understand it, she pushed every strong, brave, fierce, and reassuring emotion she had through it. Praying she could infuse him with it, and take away the desolation in his gaze. His lips parted, softening, as his brow creased, he dropped his chin to his chest, and when he raised it . . . What do you know? It’d fucking worked, somehow it’d fucking worked. The man before her even gave her a cheeky little wink.

“Our friend doesn’t like unknowns, he also doesn’t like the fact you’ve hidden her away like this, Balthazar. Why would you do such a thing? Unless you keep her for the same reasons I keep my little pet here? No, no I think not. So whatever it is she’s hiding must be worth something. Since I cannot sense what she actually is, I assume that has something to do with our little mystery, no? There will be consequences for your failures.”

He didn’t give Ballzy a chance to answer. Instead, he returned his gaze to her.

“Last chance, or the game is on. Either way I’ll find out what it is we want to know. So, will you squeal, or do I sense some fun afoot?”

Jezzie raked her gaze up and down his slim form. She flicked her eyes toward Ballzy’s worried expression, then back to Nithe for a little wink of her own, before tilting her head at Raum as if considering his words.

“You want to know my secrets, Raum?” she said in her best cotton candy sweet, slightly vapid voice. “Well, you’ll have to earn them, and honestly, I don’t think you could ever be worthy.”

He looked at her as if she was an idiot not to take his threats seriously. In fact, he looked like someone who hadn’t met anyone who wasn’t afraid of him in a very long time, and was struggling to comprehend exactly what she’d just said.

“In case you didn’t get the memo, dipshit, let me simplify it for you. That was a no to your pathetic little last chance offer. Whatever you think you’ve got, I can take it and so much more.”

His face flamed with barely contained rage. Apparently he didn’t like defiance, even as he sought to play whatever game he had in mind. More likely he didn’t like a female defying him in such a way. Considering he’d referred to her as a female dog on more than one occasion, she was willing to bet he had major mommy issues. If not mommy issues, he was a major misogynist, him being a sadistic asshole was already a done deal.

Suddenly his face went slack, an ice-cold mask fell, replacing his momentary show of anger. Now this face, with its twisted smile and dead eyes sent a chill down her spine, and had her senses on alert.

“Okay then. Balthazar, leave her cell and lock the door. It’s time to play.” His voice held the unmistakable slither of pure corrupted evil.

A sound she’d heard so many times before. But, this time it was worse. All those other times they’d come from humans, with human souls, and human weaknesses. This time they belonged to a being of the OtherRealm. A being more like her and less like the humans she preferred to hunt. What she feared the most, though, was not having her powers for what he had planned. Shit! If he was locking her in here, he wasn’t coming in either. But without her powers it was probably a good thing actually, especially if she couldn’t feed off him while she was strapped onto the cross. Which left the question about what he had planned sitting in the open air like an itch you wanted to scratch, even though it hurt like a motherfucker when you did.

With Ballzy out of the room, Jezzie watched as Raum walked behind Nithe, reached around his waist and grasped the waistband of the tattered rags Nithe wore as trousers. With one swift yank they tore down the center and fell to his ankles.

She tried not to look. Oh, how she tried. She locked her eyes onto his as best she could, refusing to give Raum the satisfaction of a response. Her nipples hardened at the thought of what was exposed to her sight, she bit her lip hard, drawing a little blood as she did so. She traced his face and took in every line, every whisker, his perfect lips, the arch of his brow, the twist to his smile . . . Was he laughing at her? She swore she could hear the echo of it in her mind. When she looked at his face as a whole again, he gave a small, barely noticeable nod, and her resolve crumbled.

He was absolutely magnificent. His chiseled chest and stomach, the defined V leading to his splayed legs. Finally her eyes landed on the prize of all prizes, and the man was full of surprises. The longer she looked, the harder he got, and what had started as an already impressive sight became more so. Six inches turned into eight, and eight into ten. It wasn’t just length, he was thicker than any man she’d ever been with. The man was truly blessed by the Almighty. Her mouth watered as she thought about taking him into her throat, caressing his smooth, hairless balls, and stroking the length of him. Deep inside her a pulse of desire caused her pussy to clench and a trickle of wet promise to dampen her thighs.

Unfortunately her perusal lasted too long, and didn’t go unnoticed.

“I’m glad you like what you see. It will make this far easier. He is a fine specimen, an unequaled pet, don’t you agree?”

Raum moved around Nithe like a predator stalking their next meal, and it made her sick to her stomach as he ran his hands over Nithe’s exposed and vulnerable body. At some point, while she’d been engrossed in checking Nithe out, Raum had palmed a large, curved dagger, a wickedly sharp one undoubtedly. He ran the flat of the blade over Nithe’s chest, and their bodies tensed in unison.

“Good, it’s working then. But, just to be sure . . .” In a flash of silver he slashed at Nithe’s cheek.

Jezzie bit the inside of her cheek as pain seared through her own face, surprising her with its suddenness. What the fuck was that? She watched as blood dripped from the gash on Nithe’s cheekbone, scratch that, blood marbled with gold slid down his face. She tried to touch her own as a reflex to the pain, but, bound as she was, she couldn’t. Taking a deep breath, she assessed herself. No blood trickled down her face, and the phantom pain faded faster than it should if the wound to her was real.

“Yes, I made a promise to Balthazar, I wouldn’t touch you. Not that I would anyway, women are such disgusting creatures. I only touch them when I have to. Thankfully it doesn’t happen often, and when it does it’s quick and easy, and never for information. Anyway, I’m not touching you, I’m touching him.” He pointed the blade at Nithe. “Whatever he feels while on this cross, so will you. The longer you hold out on me, the more you both will suffer.”

“You won’t kill him. You value him too much. You said it yourself, he’s unsurpassed in quality.”

“Oh, little girl, don’t claim to know what I would do. I’d slit his throat right here, right now, if it got me what I truly wanted.”

“You don’t truly want my answers though, do you? You want something else. Let’s see, can I guess what it is?”
