“Oh yeah, I’m working from home for the rest of the week. I would love to spend some quality time with my baby.”

“Aw, how sweet.”

“Yeah, coupled with the fact that it’s her mother’s death anniversary today. It just occurred to me as I woke up this morning. And to think June was just hospitalized. What is it with this time of the year?” He looked away, not wanting me to see his grief. He still had the smile on his face, but it wasn’t as broad. I was determined to cheer him up no matter what.

“Do you love pies?” I asked.

“Huh?”

“Pies. Do you enjoy them?”

“Uhm, I guess. It’s been a while since I had one, though.”

“Well, I heard apple pies are great for memorials.”

“Oh, okay. But I don’t plan to make it a big deal.”

“But you plan to sulk and feel sorry for yourself.”

“But why pies, though? How does that help anything?”

“Because you’ll be making them,” I said.

Hudson scoffed.

“So you can’t cook?” I continued. “What kind of man can’t bake a pie?”

“I never said that I couldn’t.”

“So you’re going to bake the pie then.”

Before he could counter what I had said, I took off the headset from June’s ears. “Good morning, baby. You like pies, right?” I asked.

June nodded, smiling.

“Daddy wants to make you an apple pie,” I said.

“Daddy can make a pie?” June asked.

“I’m surprised myself,” I teased.

“Hold up, you guys really don’t think I can make a pie? That’s like the easiest thing to make,” Hudson exclaimed.

“We’ll believe it when we see it,” I said.

“All right. Let’s make it a challenge then. We’ll both make apple pies. If I win, and I’m certain I will, you’ll get to do whatever I want for the rest of the day. If you win, I will do likewise,” Hudson proposed.

“How do we decide who the winner is?” I asked.

“June will decide. However, we will not be pointing out who owns which pie, so there’s no picking sides,” Hudson clarified.

“So I get two apple pies in one morning? Hold on, this isn’t because I got sick, right? Because I just may wish to get sick more often,” June remarked.

Both Hudson and I laughed. It had been a while since I made a pie, but I wasn’t about to back out of this challenge as long as it kept his mind from wandering.

“Next time you get sick, be rest assured you’ll get to eat lots of broccoli sprouts,” Hudson teased.

“Eww. No, thank you,” June said.
