She nodded and gulped down her juice without a care in the world. The life of a kid was pure bliss. I wished I could go back to experiencing that life.

“You’ll let me know if she doesn’t treat you right or if she does or says something strange. Yeah?”

“Yes, Daddy.” She smiled at me and continued with her food.

“Good girl.”

June’s smile had the power to heal my broken heart and motivate me to move forward. Perhaps I shouldn’t have taken her so far away from me. If I hadn’t, maybe I wouldn’t have withdrawn from the world for so long.

I called on Maria to check on Madison and inform her that she could go grab dinner in the kitchen. Maria had returned to inform me that she found Madison sleeping.

Already? Did she even shower? I thought to myself. I was definitely right about this girl.

Chapter 2

Madison

I stirred in the luxurious bed, not wanting to get up. I opened my eyes for a while and grabbed my phone that was lying right next to me. I tapped on the screen to see what time it was.

“Shit!” I hadn’t realized I had slept for so long. It was barely an hour away from the usual dinnertime. I had only planned to rest for a while on the soft mattress; I didn’t think I was going to doze off.

I could only imagine what my new boss would be thinking of me right now. I was utterly embarrassed. I quickly got out of bed and ran myself a shower.

Afterward, I decided to leave the room and find the kitchen. Perhaps helping in dinner preparation would somehow make up for my seemingly lousy behavior on my first day at work.

“Good evening,” I greeted the older lady I met in the kitchen. She was making dinner and had already gone a long way into it.

“You’re finally awake.”

Finally? Oh no! That meant they had come to check on me many times now.

“I’m sorry. I was experiencing a rough patch last night, so I didn’t get to sleep well enough.”

“No need to explain yourself, dear. I don’t have a problem with you. Just focus on doing your job right so you’ll still have it by the end of the month. The boss can be quite cranky at times, as you may have observed already.”

“Has he always been like that?”

“Well, I wouldn’t say so. Grief can do a lot to a man’s mind, including altering his personality.”

“Grief?”

“Yes. He became that way after he lost his wife. He’s even better now. You should have seen him before now. He was a complete shadow of himself.”

Madison suddenly found herself feeling sorry for the big bully.

“That’s really sad. He must have loved her very much.”

“More than life itself. He partly felt guilty for her death, too, which doubled his grief. In all, he’s not as difficult as he seems. Just don’t get in his way or space, and do your job diligently. He doesn’t appreciate carelessness.”

I nodded and then asked if she needed help with anything. I helped by rinsing off the dishes and placing them on the dining table. Hudson was on his computer when I got into the living room. He barely even looked up as I brought in the plates.

I couldn’t help but notice how hot he looked, especially now with the glasses he had on. He slightly towered above me while speaking earlier on. His fragrance was electrifying from a distance; it made me want to sniff him repeatedly, just for the fun of it.

He was still wearing his blue jean shorts, which matched his skin tone perfectly and revealed his smooth, muscular thighs and notably long legs. He didn’t look ripped but was fit enough to look good in anything, with no excess weight. In fact, his arms looked toned, suggesting that he might have lifted weights occasionally.

He was the kind of man any woman would find appealing, with soft, wavy hair that glistened under the light. His eyes were intense, as if they could penetrate deep into your soul with just a glance. Even though he looked a lot older, much like a man in his mid-thirties, I didn’t think I could possibly say no to him if he ever made advances toward me.

I had dinner with Maria, giving us room to chat some more. Hudson was with his precious girl and wouldn’t let her out of his sight for more than a couple of minutes. So, that was covered; I didn’t have to assume my responsibilities immediately.
