It was there in that position that I made a promise never to leave Hudson’s side, come what may. I made up my mind to be honest with him as well. We had already gotten under the sheets when I turned to him and said, “Babe, there’s something I would like to tell you.”

Chapter 16

Madison

Hudson was upset—more at what Dylan did than the fact that I had hesitated to tell him.

I pleaded with him to give everything a rest, given that it had been taken care of now. He made me promise not to keep secrets from him again. I obliged without hesitation.

Life was back to normal; I couldn’t be happier.

We were going to have dinner at Amy’s house over the weekend. She had already made plans. It was going to be my first time in Amy’s house. I had already begun to feel like a member of the family.

“You’re driving tonight,” Hudson announced, his mind already made up not to listen to my grumblings. I learned to drive at eighteen and got my license a couple of years later as a precaution. I had always been one to anticipate significant events and opportunities, preferring not to be caught off guard.

Hudson sat in the front seat, right beside me, taunting me all through the ride. “We should do this more often,” he said.

“Not gonna happen!” I retorted and walked past him to Amy’s doorstep. He laughed and followed behind me, pulling June along.

Amy’s housekeeper ushered us into the house.

“Please make yourselves at home. I’ll inform her that you’re here.”

The house was just as beautiful as Hudson’s, with expensive furniture and finishings.

Hudson

Amy had called earlier that day and informed me that she had some news to break to myself and Madison. From the moment I got the call, curiosity got the best of me.

It was at the dining that she finally broke the news: “We’re having a baby!”

I couldn’t contain my excitement; neither could Madison. It only felt like yesterday when Amy and I were just little kids. Now she was going to be a mother, and I an uncle. It was the very best news I had gotten all year.

That night, I went to bed smiling. Thoughts of Amy’s pretty face on a younger body filling my head. I could barely wait.

We visited the park the next day, still in the spirit of the jolly news we had received. The park was packed with a good number of people—mostly parents who had brought their kids there as well to have a swell time with them.

“Candy!” June screamed excitedly on sighting a candy stand in the middle of the park.

“And you’re going to be getting just one, missy. You’re this close to having a toothache with all the candy and ice cream you’ve been consuming. I have her and your Aunt Amy to thank for that,” said Hudson.

“Me?” Madison tried to defend, my eyes fixed on her.

“Don’t even try to deny it,” I responded, chuckling at the same time.

Madison laughed, not making any effort to deny my accusation because it was 100 percent accurate.

“Here.” I handed over the candy to June.

From where we stood, there was a merry-go-round in sight, and kids were taking a swing at it, laughing and screaming in excitement as it rocked them in circular and vertical motions.

“Would you want to play on that, too?” Madison asked, stooping in front of June so she didn’t have to talk too loudly amid the rowdiness.

“Yes, please!” June grinned, already pulling Madison by the arm.

Hudson said, “I’ll grab a smoothie and join you guys shortly. I’m quite thirsty.”

“All right. Grab one for me as well,” I replied.
