“I’m not as strong as you, Zander, who can shut off those demons and let those intrusive thoughts scare away anyone who dares invade your space. Whether physically, emotionally, oreven mentally. Without a set boundary… knowing I only have to suffer for a few short hours, I’d spiral back to that weak little girl. The nerdy bitch who almost let herself become a disabled freak because she didn’t have a backbone to stand up for what was right. To stop the agonizing scrutiny and protect myself.”

It’s a bit funny when you think about it because here I am.

Protecting a little girl who isn’t fully related to me.

All for what?

To pay a debt I never should have gathered, to begin with?

A shame to be born into an empire that wants nothing but to hide you from the world.

“Get to class, love birds,” someone calls out to us, followed by a few chuckles.

I confirm it’s a group of jocks in hockey gear, their smug expression, matched with their bulk physiques, reminding me of Domino.Though the fucker never smiles.I realize they’re right, though.

Class will start soon.

“Thanks for bringing me to my locker,” I whisper and let my hand drop from his head. I realize this position really makes it look like we’re in love with one another, but I don’t hate it.

Guess that night with Zander really made my walls fall down.

“You don’t realize how strong and dangerous you are, Dolcezza.”

I blink, realizing a granola bar is now in my line of vision.

Taking it before he can explain himself, I feel his lips lightly press against my left cheek while his hand very gently squeezes my right arm—the bandaged spot that holds our promised mark of carved flesh.

“Thank you for standing up to Scarlett.” I never expected his gratitude. “I know it’s odd to defend him, but don’t get too madat Dom over it.” When he catches onto my deep frown, he all but chuckles.

“Out of the three of us Ruthless Kings, I feel Dom is the most pathetic,” he whispers in my ear. The feel of his hot breath against my flesh sends shivers through me. “A man who can only thrive with his anger. Not his mind. Not his money. Not his assets bestowed by his father’s empire. Take the chance to observe Domino’s life at Leighton U, Gemini, and you’ll come to realize who’s the real pathetic one among all of us.”

He lightly tugs my earlobe and proceeds to kiss the nape of my neck.

“I owe you,” his voice barely hits the air. “I’ll repay you when you need the distraction,” he vows. With a light press of his lips against the side of my neck, he lets me go and proceeds to walk down the hall.

“Your first class is Business Economics. Ares shares it with you. He always sits in the front like a smart fucker. First door, right here.” He pauses right in front of the door of dark red and points to it. Then he looks back over his shoulder and gives me a cynical smirk.

“Wear my uniform tomorrow, Sweet Dynamite. Purple and green would look far better on you.” He leaves me with that, disappearing as he turns the corner.

“He really could be an ally,” I whisper to myself as I look at the granola bar that reads ‘extra fiber, boost of energy, 0g of Sugar’ in funky pink letters. “You’d never think he’d worry about me.”

Shaking my head, I open the granola bar and proceed to eat it as I work on unlocking my locker with the welcome package I downloaded to my phone when we registered at the main office. With a beep and chime sound, the locker automatically opens up.

It’s not empty.

Arching my right eyebrow, I notice the packed lunch sitting on the top shelf with a sticky note on it.

“Stop skipping meals,” I read it before squinting my eyes to catch onto the smaller print. “Soup isn’t a proper breakfast.”

Warren.

God, he saw what happened at the breakfast table, didn’t he?

I have to fan myself from not getting too hot.

Dammit. Why am I getting flustered over that? He doesn’t even like me. Even if he did, this is just work. I’m his payroll. He won’t do shit. Ugh.

Shaking my head, I’m grateful for the lunch box. I peek and confirm it has a bunch of stuff I normally eat during the day to keep up with my protein goals.
