“Watch me,” he assures me as he continues to look at me from head to toe. It’s hard to stand still when he’s looking at me like I’m his favorite slice of frosted cake. It makes me fidget as I wait in silence, but it doesn’t bother Ares’ concentration as he ends up getting up and walking around me.

“I need to touch you for a second,” he warns. “Is that fine with my Maiden?”

“I shouldn’t have a choice,” I remind him as we share a look.

“You’re right,” he agrees. “But right now, you’re enjoying your victorious shopping spree, so I can bend the rules a little.”

Bend the rules.

“O-Okay,” I don’t know why it makes me flustered with his initiative to ask permission, but I’m blushing over it. “You can touch me.”

“Thank you.” I’m impressed by his manners as he starts with the cleavage of the current bralette I’m wearing. From his gaze, he’s focused and not doing this simply out of a weird sexual context.

Acknowledging that makes me relax further as he moves on to the leather skirt I’m wearing. When he’s finished, he nods to himself.

“I’ll be back.” He doesn’t wait for my reply as he unlocks the changing room and ditches.

I don’t know why it’s so intriguing and mysterious of him to leave without much explanation, but I’m feeling a bubbling moment of anticipation as I wonder what he’s planning.

When he returns, I’m sitting patiently for him.

“Strip for me, Sweet Canary,” he encourages as he begins hanging a bunch of clothes on the black metal rails next to the mirror.

Instead of being defiant, I just go along with it.

He’s going to see me naked either way. He may already have with me wearing Dom’s shirt last time. Someone had to have put me in it, and I strongly believe he was the culprit.

Stripping out of the outfit leaves me completely nude before him.

There’s still no spark of lust in his eyes as he takes in my body from the front side.

“Turn around.” I follow his instructions and shiver when I feel his fingers trail along my back. “These burns piss me off when I see them,” he quietly mutters.

I want to answer him, reminding him that there isn’t much I can do about them unless I cover them with tattoos. I could, but truthfully, I’m not ready to deal with that.

I haven’t truthfully forgiven or forgotten the culprit of those cigarette butt burns.

The sudden touch of his lips against my body makes me grow rigid for a few seconds.

“Sorry,” he quietly whispers, yet lays another kiss on my flesh.Followed by another.“Sometimes, I wonder if I was in Dom’s circle of friends, whether I would have allowed him to take it this far.”

“You allowed him to humiliate me at dinner in the Leighton Residence,” I remind him as if he’s forgotten.Maybe he has.

“That…” He needs a moment. “Was an error in judgment.”

That isn’t something I ever envisioned hearing leave Ares’ lips.

“I dissociated from the idea of you being someone who could earn my respect and allowed it to occur, knowing I had little ground to stand on if I wanted to confront Dom’s father there and then.”

I’m not expecting his arms to wrap around my waist or to feel his body press against my bare back, but I don’t grow rigid at his touch.

I further relax.

Indulge in the unique cologne combination that seems to blend marvelously with my rosé Tom Ford perfume. Listening to the way he breathes and how his hot breath tickles my flesh further pulls us into this sensual energy.

I’m not mad at it… not upset with him, especially with his sudden honesty.

“Each Ruthless King has a dark past. Parts of that past are filled with trauma that has led us to be cold and merciless as a form of protection. You can’t be hurt by someone when you have no emotional attachment to them. It’s no different from when our enemies wish to use our bonds with others against us. Can’t have an effect if you have no one deemed important to you and those around you.” He takes a deep inhale and lets it out.
