Warren doesn’t answer.

Instead, he lets out a nervous sigh.

“Go home. The three of you.”

“Arie—” Ares tries to begin, but Warren cuts him right off.

“You three want to act like Kings? Learn how to back the fuck down when you’ve walked into a hornet’s nest!” he snaps. “Go. Home. If I find V alive…” The daunting pause makes us realize just how real all of this is.None of it is a game.“I’ll let you know.”

With those words, he hangs up, leaving the three of us to stand there.

It’s not until we hear sirens in the distance do I notice Zander’s departure.

“Shit. Zayn?” He keeps walking, forcing us to share a look and chase after him. We manage to follow him to the parking lot, heading to my car.

“Zander?” Ares tries this time around, and that’s when he pauses mid-stride. “Fuck. Zander… listen. Let’s go home, and we’ll get the tools we need. My brother is good at tracking. He should be able to find her.”

“Which side are you on?”

He turns around to stare my way, leaving me to look at the distraught expression he carries on his pale flesh.

“Wh-What?”

“Who side are you on?” Zander whispers. “Ours? Or on whomever can offer you a guaranteed future?”

“Zander… this isn’t the time?—”

“You better pray to the Lord Almighty Sweet Dynamite is safe and sound,” Zander whispers and raises his hand that’s gripping that scrunched piece of paper.

That bloodstained sticky note.

“Or I’ll carve your flesh. Bit by bit. Until you have no fucking flesh left.”

I swallow hard, knowing he means every word.

When my phone rings, I rush to pick it up.

“Leighton speaking.”

“Uh… hello, Mr. Leighton.”It’s Margo.“We followed your instructions to move to the safe house. Is everything alright?”

What…

My eyes widen as her words repeat in my head again and again.

“What?” Ares questions and looks at me. I put the phone on speaker, requesting Margo to repeat exactly what she said.

“Um… Hello, Mr. Leighton. We followed your instructions to move to the safe house. Is everything alright?” she repeats loud and clear.

“Safehouse,” Ares whispers. “We never instructed anything.”

“We got your message, Mr. Leighton. We can play the recording.”

No. This is a distraction. There’s a deeper-rooted meaning to this.

“Where’s Miss Prescott?” The question comes from Zander.

“Ah. I believe she was sleeping in her room. I’d already sent one of the security guards to move her to a different location. One in all black?” Margo announces. “He wore a mask. Kind of resembled a bunny of sorts.”
