The mere mention of it makes me blush as I let out a huff.

“No.”

“Right, right,” Kian brushes it off before I shut down the idea of talking in general. “You don’t understand what the purpose of the Ruthless Kings is at Leighton or any royal school, huh?”

“It’s not like I don’t understand,” I emphasize. “No one has taken the chance to explain all of this to me. My father originally volunteered to but never got the chance. Warren was supposed to explain the hierarchies and such, but shit happened, and we never got the chance to get through it. None of the guys have brought it up, especially after the dinner at the Leighton Residence. I know there are other ‘Kings’ or, I guess, royals on campus, but I don’t see what the big deal of this “show” is all about. Like, how does their way of treating me nicely benefit anyone aside from their horny needs?”

Kian looks at me for a long moment, as if trying to figure out the best way of reviewing my lack of understanding of this hierarchy scheme of sorts.

“There’s a reason why they leave you in the dark,” he begins and gets up. Walking to the door, he proceeds to ensure it’s locked before walking to another corner where there’s a switch. Flicking it off, he waltzes back to his chair next to the side of the bed and sits down.

Crossing one leg over the other, he gets to the point.

“Now, I have five minutes before one of those Ruthless Fuckers comes and checks if you’re alive, so let me be brief,” he declares. “There’s a ball coming up. The Leighton Royal Ball for Chosen Elites.”

A ball for Chosen Elites?

“It happens four months into the school term and is done so for a very good reason. This is not a space where all students are invited. This is specifically made for those with blood on their hands. Generations of it.”

“Mafia Empires, Drug Lords, Serial Assassins?” I offer and watch the way his eyes darken with a bob of his head, confirming I’m right on point.

“Specifically, the heirs or current rulers of various mafia empires come together with candidates from every royal schoolacross America. There are four main schools, Leighton Royals University being one of them. I’m sure you’ve heard of Saint Joaquin University, which is another royal academic institute, as well as the other prestigious competitive institute, Ásvaldr Prescott University. The last one is normally kept on the down low on purpose. All we know is that the university is sponsored by another empire head.”

A secret university they don’t know about.

“So, what happens at this gala?”

“Connections,” he strictly notes, which can be anything from political or financial. “Sometimes exchanges. That’s when one of the roles you play as a Maiden comes into play.”

“Exchanges?” I’m trying to understand what he means when it comes to being a Maiden.

“At Leighton U, as of now, there’s three main sets of royal Kings. Ruthless Kings of Carnage, Deviant Lords of Mayhem, and Savage Heirs of Redemption. You’ve yet to meet a Deviant Lord or a Savage Heir because they’re in the upperclassman sectors, which you won’t be going around until you attend classes after the gala,” Kian reveals.

I’m already trying to compartmentalize all of this information.

Ruthless Kings of Carnage.

Deviant Lords of Mayhem

SavageHeirs of Redemption.

“Think of them as the Tainted Trinity of Royals,” Kian summarizes. “At Leighton U, each set of royal men has a Maiden. That Maiden signs a contract to abide by these men’s wishes until stated otherwise.” When he sees I’m following his lead, he gets to the real point.

“Other students watch how these royal men treat their Maiden. How she is taken care of. Spoiled or abused. Tainted with sin or empowered to rise. All their actions are monitored.Watched. Not just by the student bodies, but by others paid to blend within these royal walls and see what each group has to offer.”

“So, there are people acting like students, observing how we do during our academic year. Whether that be grades, our performance within the school walls, or occasionally outside those walls… like at the party?”

“Like at the party,” Kian agrees with a slight smirk. “You’ve gotten attention and favor from Barbieri getting shot and Moonshine being found dead.”

“So, is that good favor… or bad favor?”

“I don’t know,” he admits, but from the twinkle in his eyes, I have a hunch this may be well in my favor. “If someone is protecting you from those who have every intention of hurting you, that means you’re valuable to someone.”

Bunny Stalker…

“What’s the purpose, then, with all this monitoring? What do they benefit when they arrive at this gala and connect with one another?”

“They make bids. Offer exchanges. Decide whether a Maiden should remain among their set of royals or whether a new additional royal should be added.”
