I overhear Ares’ complaint from the balcony. I catch onto the scent of smoke, which may be why they’re out there.
“He’s plotting something,” Zander mutters.
“Exactly what?” Ares questions. “Against us?
“Feels like it,” Zander mutters. “Would make sense as to why he’s been distant lately.”
“Zander.” I’ve never heard Ares’ voice sound this cold.Menacing.It’s not far off from Warren’s when he’s mad, but not the Ares who has softened up to me over these last few weeks.I keep forgetting they didn’t get their Ruthless King titles for no reason.“Domino wouldn’t be foolish enough to turn his back on us.”
“There’s a reason why that Stalker gave us a stern warning, Ares.”
I hold my breath and stay completely still, needing to listen to what Zander has to say.Desperate to figure out how much they know.
“He’s probably a player in this grand game, Zander. Everyone is. Scarlett, Moonshine… they’re all fighting to secure their empires and get ahead yet another year. With the gala approaching, I’m not surprised with what that Stalker did.”
“And yet you had to smoke through two full packs that night to calm yourself down,” Zander mutters. “Not surprised, my ass.”
“Get to the point, Zayn,” Ares presses, dropping his voice further. “Sweet Canary’s going to be here any minute.”
“I made a bargain with Dolcezza.”
“And that is?”
“Find out her real name,” Zayn announces.
“Are you saying Gemini Ivanka Prescott isn’t her real name?” Ares confronts. “Or Verena?”
“It’s not as if she’s making a challenge out of it,” Zander mutters. “That and to get you out of the contract to marry her little sister.”
“Me?” Ares needs a moment. “So us… since you wiggled your weasel ass out of that.”
“I played it smart,” Zander argues.
“You knew in your fucking heart that day when you laid eyes on her, she’d be your end game,” Ares complains. “Fucking lunatic.”
“You and me only,” Zander gets right to it. “Why not Domino? Don’t say some bullshit to piss me the fuck off.”
Ares sighs, but the silence just lingers.
“You’re a loyal fucker, but I’m beginning to wonder if Domino is the same,” Zander mumbles. “Sweet Dynamite is going to be the key to finding that out for us.”
“You’re making it sound like she’s using us.”
“She could be,” Zander laughs. “And I wouldn’t give a flying fuck. In fact, I’d be fucking proud.”
