“I’ll kill him. Shed his fucking flesh, piece by piece.” I don’t know if I’m speaking English or German.No. I don’t care.“How dare he?”

The blindfold slacks a bit, enough that my eyes aren’t fully covered. Opening them, I look up into those set of eyes that are no different from what I view in my reflection every morning as I question my morals for going to this university that holds more secrets than any place of academy refuge.

Only they’re not emotionless.

They reflect a pinch of anger. A touch of murderous intent.

A vow that this is only the beginning.

“In order to kill a mockingbird, what do you have to do first?” I barely hear the words, but they hold so much meaning.

So many life lessons from the man who holds the foundation of our world and upbringing.

“Aim the weapon,” I whisper. “One that leaves not a chance of error in sniping your prey.”

“Good,” he approves, fiddling with the blindfold as if he’s struggling to tie it.A distraction.“Now you play the same game that fucker is playing. Up until the gala.”

“You knew…” I can’t stop the tear from my left eye that rolls down my cheek. “Of course, you knew. You’re always a step ahead of me.”

“No,” he admits and even shakes his head slightly. “I’ve never been a step ahead. I have someone even more cunning around me who catches things faster than anyone.”

“And who’s that?” I ponder, my eyes catching a glimmer of something from my far left. I dare take a glance, and for a mere few seconds, all those succumbing emotions that beg to drown me in a pit of self-misery are silenced.

Just a few seconds to admire the almost naked beauty, covered in various shades of paint. Those unique eyes of emotionless wonder stare right back at me.

“A devious canary who knows exactly when to sing,” Aries whispers. “She’s but a catalyst in the grand scheme of our reign,” he repeats those very words from long ago.

The words that left my very mouth relentlessly weeks ago.

“A sacrificial lamb,” I whisper. “Only it’s bout time we changed who that role belongs to.”

I don’t need to look at Aries to feel the shift in his vibe.

That lingering sense of pride.

“Royals are born to rule,” he affirms the words I must make sure I don’t forget from now on.

Never again. It’s time we play a game of our own.

“And rule we shall,” I vow with everything in my chest while my eyes never leave those stunning eyes from afar.

I see the twitch at the corners of those dark, seductive lips, and I reel on the way my Sweet Canary smiles.

Only nothing is sweet about her grin.

It’s confirmation that our Maiden was never destined to be one… at least, not for long.

She was destined to be a Ruthless Queen, and she’s about to prove how ruthless she’s willing to be in the den of carnage we invited her into.

All for the sake of getting what her heart wholly desires.

The darkness steals away my sight, but Verena’s smile still haunts me as I await her next move.

Maybe it’s time for me to let my Queen in.
