“Damn. Express changes, huh?” I voice quietly while my eyes end up closing because of how heavy they feel. “I haven’t packed yet.”

“Moved your essentials long ago,” Warren confesses as he strokes my cheek. The touch is far too soothing. “At the request of Mr. Benedict.”

“He’s more of a leader than he likes to admit,” I mutter, trying hard not to drift off, but it’s getting tricky. “Domino will retaliate, you know,” I whisper. “You have to be guarded.”

“You’re the one who has to be guarded,” he argues. “And need to carry a weapon at all times.”

“My trusty Knifey can do wonders,” I hum.

“Ugh. Don’t give your blade a name, V,” he grumbles in annoyance.

I giggle quietly while I feel as though my muscles are more relaxed now.

Ares is secure. Zander is plotting something menacing, and with this new set of plans, everything could go to hell by midnight tonight.

The gala is supposed to be at the end of next week, so even if I have to stay somewhere else until then, it’ll be fine. Heck, I can probably call in sick or use this damn fever as an excuse to get out of shit for a few days.

“Warren?” I barely croak out his name. “Why didn’t you end up with your Ruthless Maiden?” That’s the one thing that’s been bugging me since I became one myself. If he was previously a Ruthless King, that has to mean he could have been in a similar predicament where their Maiden was the center of their attention.

He may have been my bodyguard back then, but it certainly wasn’t for twenty-four hours a day like it is now that I’m older and on the move unpredictably.

“She didn’t love me.”

I’m surprised by his words, but I don’t have the strength to open my eyes and seek his expression.

“Why?” I can’t imagine the reasoning. Warren has his flaws, yes, but he could be a loyal man who can love unconditionally.

At least, that’s what I see in him. Loads of potential.

“Said I was in love with someone else.”

I’m even more surprised by his words, feeling the way he moves the cold cloth from my forehead. I’m fighting hard not to fall asleep, but I’m losing the battle.

Just stay a little longer.

“It doesn’t matter, anyway,” he concludes, waiting for my answer that doesn’t come.

I’m on the verge of consciousness when I feel the light kiss on my lips, followed by the tender touch on my forehead. “She died before she could truly prosper in this world of bloodshed and sin.”

His revelation leaves me wondering what had to have occurred for her to perish when he was in her life with the set of Ruthless Kings at his side, but I know those questions won’t be answered today.

“I have to prevent history from repeating itself.” I hear his soft, heartbroken voice. The tone makes my heart ache for him.“I just need to ensure you’re out of Leighton’s clutches, V. Then… the real games will begin.”

I drift off to sleep for the longest time until I hear my phone ringing.

It feels like I’ve been asleep for ten minutes, which is why I’m groaning in irritation, trying to find the mini-device. When I manage to grab it, I tap the phone and put it to my ear.

Only to flinch from the shouting.

“IVA! The game starts in fifteen FUCKING minutes! Where are you?”

“Ugh. Domino, fuck! I’m sick! I have a fever. I can’t come,” I whine but try to sit up. The wet cloth on my forehead falls to my lap while the world is spinning from the movement. I try to fight against it, hoping this nauseous feeling goes away because I’m not vomiting up the delicious dinner I had from yesterday.

Shit. Did I even eat breakfast today?

I haven’t even taken my medication…

“IVA! There are three major investors here, and I need them to put their bets on me! That requires YOUR presence!”
