“Where’s Gem?—”

“I don’t know where the fuck Iva is! I already dealt with Zayn talking smack and wasting my life force! Don’t contribute to my already shitty mood.”

“Domino. She’s not in the house, and Zayn’s room is an absolute mess,” Ares reveals. “She doesn’t have her phone either because it’s broken into pieces.”

Wait… she’s not home?

“Check her fucking tracker!” I snap.

“Internet service is down through Leighton. I can only call you using the satellite network. None of the towers are working,” Ares reveals. “Fuck, I get you’re in a bad mood, but this is serious.”

“If she ran away, it’s not our problem,” I dismiss it, yet I’m pulling out my phone to check her location.

What the…

“She wasn’t feeling well, Domino. I called Warren. He said she could barely stand, and he put her to bed because she had a fever. He’s on his way back here, but he won’t get here for another hour, and there’s going to be a fierce thunderstorm soon. He can’t be riding a bike in that shit if it starts earlier.”

“Well, that’s not my business how your brother gets back to his assigned client. That’s what we’re paying him for!” I snap, but my attention is on the dark-red dotted line that’s blinking on the map.

Why is she here? At the mansion…

“What Zander is paying him for,” Ares dares to correct me. “Don’t talk big when you barely have the funds to cover shit.”

“Excuse me?” My grip hardens around my phone, making me hope I don’t break the bloody thing.

“We’re going to keep playing this game? Giving off the impression you’re the big leader of the pack when you’re the weakest fucking link?”

“You really got some balls to be talking to me like that,” I warn. He’s so fucking lucky I’m thirty minutes from the house, or else he would have enjoyed my fist smashing into his pretty face.

Fuck all the fees they would charge me for putting this fucker in his place.

“I got some balls?” Ares blows out a breath. “How long has it been since I’ve been covering your shame, Dom? Better yet, how long until I get my five hundred thousand dollars you borrowed after wanting to show off to Verena by offering the black AMEX card as though you’re the primary cardholder?”

Shit…

“I didn’t think orphans would have such high tastes,” I mutter. “Whatever. You’re wasting time talking shit when you were calling me over Iva. Why don’t you stop bringing up useless shit and?—”

“Why did you set me up to be the sole name on the contract between the Ruthless Kings and Prescott’s younger daughter?”

I pause my intention to open the car door to absorb his question into my mind. My heart skips a beat, realizing he somehow found out.

Fuck… how did he find out? It shouldn’t matter. A few days have already passed, so everything is already set in stone with Barbieri.

“Can we talk about this lat?—”

“So, brotherhood means nothing to you,” Ares concludes instead. “Loyalty doesn’t matter on this board you’re playingchess on. All that matters is everyone is a pawn to be used and discarded when their turn is up.”

I’d be lying if I pretended as though I wasn’t feeling something along the lines of disappointment in myself. To me, my actions were justifiable, but I can tell from Ares’ voice that this is nothing but betrayal in his line of vision.

Justifiable.

“Ares…”

“Don’t fucking deny that I wasn’t loyal to you… you fucking prick,” Ares whispers, and I can hear how he’s fighting those emotions that leak off his voice. The anger. The sadness. The resentment.“I shielded you at your lowest. All those friends who enjoyed hyping you up when you bullied innocent people like Verena. Where the fuck were they when your account was in the fucking negative?”

I hate to acknowledge the past, but the reminder brings back those various memories.

The heaviness of humiliation in the midst of all those I thought were my friends…
