Crossing one leg over the other, he blows out the steam of smoke from that cigar I can tell costs a hefty penny.

“Future heir?” Father tilts his head my way. “When did you earn that title?”

I stare at him, wide-eyed, as he begins to laugh like a fucking lunatic.

“Oh, Domino. I’ve given you so many opportunities to build on yourself. So fucking many of my own peers mock me for it. Those I deem as enemies have proven to be better at makingbusiness deals that lift up the empire without an officialized association, and yet here you are. Thinking because you carry Leighton’s blood that you’ll take all of this from me?”

What…

Take away from him?

“It’s my birthright,” I whisper.

“And who said you’re the only child again?” he questions and reminds me that he’s right.I’m no longer the only child…“Funny how you mock the brothers for their decisions and actions in our world, yet they’re so far ahead of the game than you.”

I can only assume he’s referring to Ares and Aries.

“The bodyguard hired by the Benedicts, protecting a Prescott and pledging allegiance to further guard the potential Leighton heir. That sounds like a smart move, especially when he can rise and claim theAlbrecht Empire any moment he wishes. With his parents’ approval, of course,” Father discloses. “But he doesn’t have to. He can do exactly what he’s doing and still enjoy the very generous pot of success because his little brother is not only a millionaire, thanks to his modeling gig during the day, but he’s quite a skilled assassin at night. I thought Benedict was the crazed torturer, but it’s clear he loves gathering all the evidence needed to take people down. I can see how he helped another client take down Moonshine so swiftly. They’re a dangerous combo. I can see why you originally chose them to be your friends and fellow Ruthless Kings. A shame you forgot their roles while you went on your own spree to maintain an empire I never promised would be yours.”

I’m trying to tame my breaths as realization kicks in.

“You have no intention of passing down the empire to me,” I conclude.

“Why would I?” he counters. “You haven’t proven to me that you deserve it, have you?”

I can’t think of the right words to say.

He knows it.

“We’re wasting time, so let me get to the point, son.”He reaches over to press a button on a gold speaker box. “Molly? Can you schedule a car for Domino? Drop him back to his sanctuary.”

I hate the way he sayssanctuaryin pure mockery.

“Yes, Sir. I’ll do that right away.”

“Thank you,” he expresses his gratitude and leans back into his chair.

“I could drive there myself.”

“You can’t drive there when you don’t have a car.”

“I parked my G-wagon before the garage because the fucking door wouldn’t work. Neither would the card to enter here! A guard had to let me in.”

“I wonder why?” Father questions.

“They said something about a stupid outage, but everything is working…” I trail off because I realize something. No fucking way. “Y-You’re kicking me out?”

“Well, it’s not kicking out when you haven’t been on the lease since you turned eighteen,” he vouches. “If you took the initiative to find your own place, you would have noticed that upon inquiry of assets to secure a home of your own. Then again, you built that sanctuary from the ground up by buying the land… which, if my memory still serves me well, was bought with Benedict’s and Albrecht’s contributions.”

How does he know that…

No… why does he know that?

“I made Iva cry today. Something I haven’t done in over ten years. Her finding out what I did to Eva, our daughter, disturbed her, and she feels my punishment should be taking the ‘L’ and watching your downfall. An intriguing punishment if you ask me, but since you are the one who almost paralyzed ourdaughter, it would make sense why she wants to see you suffer. I applaud her for her cunning nature. It’s a turn-on, which is why I had to enjoy a few hours of fucking her. Just to remind her that she wouldn’t want to leave me permanently,” he proudly discloses to me. “I may be flawed and fucked up, but I’m still very valuable.”

“Meaning you’re setting me up,” I conclude.

“Yes,” he admits. “But I can potentially fix this.”
