Three safety buttons are being pressed.

I don’t need to see Zander and Ares holding their guns, ready to shoot this intruder up, but I know if I don’t speak up, he’ll be dead before either has a chance to riddle a bullet inside his trembling flesh.

“Warren. Don’t shoot yet.” My voice is leveled but holds a pinch of sternness. It’s enough to make my hidden bodyguard push the intruder forward, the barrel of his gun against the back of his head.

The intruder is wearing the typical all-black ensemble, but his eyes are a tad weird.Or he’s half-blind.

“An unwelcome visitor in OUR sanctuary?” Zander questions.

The depth of his voice has me shivering in place because it’s nothing like his usual gleeful tone. It’s like we’ve unlocked a different person entirely.

“A man who would waltz in here to dance with three bringers of death either has information to be spilled or a suicide wish,” Ares whispers. The quiet set of words doesn’t obliterate the hardness in them.

“You’re half-blind,” I point out the obvious. “Meaning you’ve worked your ass off to reach a level of caliber to infiltrate a space like this. How much is your client paying you to risk your life trying to intrude in a space like this to see a bunch of college students?”

I think many assassins believe their targets are sinister masterminds who’ve killed armies of individuals in this dark world of bloodshed, but when it comes down to it, most of us are young adults forced to walk down the path our parents have carved to secure their wealthy empires.

It does inflict a bit of sympathy on the assassin.

Today is no different.

“C-College kids?”

“Well, this mansion is on Leighton University soil,” I remind him as if he had no fucking idea. “You had to enter the school property to get down this road, yes?”

He’s forcing himself to pull out the blade I stabbed him with, making him grunt in dismay as he uses his other hand to cover the bleeding wound.

Doesn’t give us much time.

“I was dropped off here to finish a job,” he grunts. “Fuck. He didn’t tell me you were a bunch of rich kids.”

“Minus my bodyguard,” I note with a smirk. “He’s an adult.”

I catch the slight annoyance in Warren’s eyes, despite his effort to look menacingly back at his prey.

“So, who’s your target?” I inquire. “I know it ain’t me.”

“You’re the only female here,” he argues, to which I shrug and cross my arms over my chest.

“Thank you, Captain Obvious. Glad to know, despite your loss of vision, that you can acknowledge my presence,” I voice. “So, who wants me dead? Don’t say Mr. Leighton ‘cause I know he despises me, so that’s a waste of valuable time.”

“Dom’s dad hates you?” Zander is staring at me despite the obvious danger of this guy spinning the situation on us.

“Long story. Boring and uneventful,” I sum up. “Also, very predictable, so I don’t think it’s him.”

“It’s not.”

We’re forced to look to our left, only to see Dom pointing a gun directly at the intruder. His eyes are lifeless—those same eyes that enjoyed making my life a living hell every day until I finally got away from being his prized possession for scrutiny.

“So, who the fuck are you, or I’ll gladly blow your brains out?”

The intruder curses before his gaze returns to me.

I frown at the way he looks me up and down as if he can’t comprehend my existence, but I notice his jaw movement.

Son of a?—

I’m jumping three steps at a time before I tackle the man to the ground and shove my hand down his throat, causing him to vomit whatever pill shit he was about to crush and ingest.
