I don’t know why the words leave my lips, but they do as I ignore how I very gently take Dolcezza’s hand in a way that doesn’t catch anyone’s attention.

Just hidden in the shadows of the car.

“You’re the ones we psychos envision slicing your throats after you’ve gladly agreed to sell us to men and women in white lab coats who have nothing better to do but fund unethical drug usage on us chained specimens. All because we lost our sanity one too many times because of how fucked-up this world is.”

A Ruthless King shouldn’t feel sympathy for those outside his royal entourage, but oddly enough, Sweet Dynamite has alreadylaid a wound upon my flesh. Now, it bleeds with vengeance, making me want to lay a foundation that will leave more than one person suffering from my wrath.

Warren doesn’t answer, and I don’t bother saying anything else as I stare out the window and watch the lights of the city fade away and be replaced with nothing but shadowed bushes and acres of land.

It’s the perfect scenery to unpack this moment in my mind, piece by piece, and confirm that the true victim in this case is Gemini. I may not feel what some would say is empathy for her, but I also don’t feel sympathy.

She was forced into this scenario, but watching how she’s entered our lives so suddenly without backing down proves she knew what she was getting into.

If she wished to stop Warren from giving her that drug, she would have. I saw it in her eyes as I watched the cameras from the office.

Watched their entire confrontation and the obvious reflection of betrayal that blossomed and withered into broken deception. Her acceptance sprouted as the drug began to take its effect, but it didn’t stop those tears from rolling down her flushed cheeks or the words that were spoken like venom.

What has captured me in this loop of uncertainty is whether I want to participate in this game of antagonizing her. Bullying her until she breaks and is nothing but broken pieces that can never be put together again.

Dom may despise her.

Ares may be intrigued by her.

But me…

I may actually want her.

She may be sick. Potentially have mental issues, but so do I.

If anything, she could accept me first.

Frankly, there’s no problem in having an ally in this merciless world, which would do anything to ruin us psychotic bastards.

Would she be down with the idea?

How would I offer her the ultimatum?

Speak it in a way that still entwines with my role as a King but is inviting enough to prove I could be someone on her side.

I’ll need that evening to think it through, but the slight tightness around my hand forces me to look at Dolcezza once more. She’s still staring forward, lost in the countdown on the screen that displays the time, but her squeeze is as firm as it can be.

I’ve only dared to lower my barriers to three people in my life.

Ares, Domino, and Arlo.

Not even Kian has been deemed worthy enough for me to let down all my walls. Yet in this car, my heart wishes to open it up for one more.

Squeezing her hand, I look away to stare at the dark oasis of trees and inhabited fields, my mind buzzing to make an offer even Sweet Dynamite can’t refuse.

I will need Arlo to pass by, though.

If Warren is so pressed on us to see how merciless this world of royals really is outside of our protected sanctuary, tonight will give us a glimpse of it.

That will give me enough pieces to lay on the board for this game of chess, where I have every intention of making that ultimate move of checkmate. No matter who has to be sacrificed along the way.

I smile at my resolution, seeing the glimmer in my eyes at the hint of my reflection in the tinted glass.

There’s that side of me that everyone is desperate to keep tamed from having his outcry. From burning the very world that has done everything to make mine a living hell.
