“He followed me there.” She gripped the fabric on his arms. “He’s here, Will.”

“Parker’s getting Jeff.” His hand ran over her hair as her breaths evened with his.

“I’m scared.” She wasn’t sure she spoke loud enough for him to hear.

“I know.”

Her fingers clenched his shirt so hard they hurt. “I don’t want to let go of you.”

“Then don’t.” His arms squeezed tighter. “Stay here as long as you need.”

“How did he find me? I mean, I’ve done everything right–”

“We’ll get this straightened out. Seeing him feels like a bad thing right now, but now we know where he is.” He ran a hand along her back.

She didn’t have it in her to smile at him or look up, but she did squeeze his arm. He shifted her so her face moved from his chest to his neck. She could spend hours against him, breathing in the fresh scent of his cologne that mingled with fabric softener.

“I’m not a weak person. Please don’t tell anyone I broke down like this.” She jutted her chin, hoping she appeared dignified.

“This stays between us,” he agreed.

Parker stuck his head in the room. “Chief Lawson is on his way.”

“You ready for this?” William wiped the remnants of her tears with his thumbs.

Lucy let out a long breath. “No. But I’ll be okay.”

He stood and pulled her up, wrapping his arm around her as they walked down the hall.

“Lucy,” Bridgett called from behind them. “These came for you. I took care of them until you got back.”

William and Lucy both turned around. Her world tilted as Bridgett moved to hand her the vase of dark purple lilies.

“They’re from him,” Lucy whispered. “He’s sent them before. Exactly like those.”

“Toss them,” William said to Bridgett.

“You’re kidding, right? These are expensive flowers. Lucy has an admirer.” She moved closer with the impressive arrangement.

“They mean death, the flowers. They’re also poisonous,” Lucy said.

Bridgett froze and glanced at the flowers. “You’re serious?”

“Unfortunately.” Numbness took over her fear. Lucy welcomed it.

“Why on Earth would someone send you poisonous flowers?” Bridgett did not seem the least bit impressed. But then, did she ever?

“Because he’s trying to send me a message.”

Bridgett glanced from Lucy to William to Parker. She looked at Lucy kind of strange.

“You’re kidding.” She sniffed at one, and Lucy nearly fainted.

William snatched the flowers from her and tossed them roughly into a nearby trash.

Bridgett pursed her lips. “Those are nice flowers.”

“Poisonous death flowers,” William growled.
