She finally shut off the water, wrapped a towel around herself, and cracked the door.

“The woman I realized that I love kept something from me and I didn’t take that well,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

The woman I love… The words were an anchor holding her in place. People didn’t love her. She wasn’t built for that.

“You love me?” she asked, opening the door.

He crossed his arms and blew out a breath. “Yeah, Luce. I love you.”

“You can’t,” she said, disbelieving. “No one loves me. I’m not that kind of person.”

“What kind of person’s that?” His expression turned serious. Well, more serious.

She opened her mouth but the words wouldn’t come. She cleared her throat and tried again. “The kind people love.”

“Didn’t get that memo.” He searched her face, but she had no idea what he could possibly be seeking.

No, he couldn’t love her. “You only think you love me. It’s just an illusion. I don’t… I don’t think I can do this, Will.”

He tried to open the door. “Can’t do what?”

She held the door firm, so there was only a sliver of opening. “This. Us. Love. I… I don’t know how.”

“We’ll work through it. Just… keep Neilson with you today. So I know you’re okay.” He didn’t say anything more when he tugged the door shut.

She took her time, rubbing a towel against her chilled skin, combing her frozen hair.

They were done. It was time to leave Confluence. She’d send out her resume tape immediately. It was old, but it would have to be her ticket out of here.

Stupid caterpillar…

She firmed her resolve, held the pieces together, and stepped from the bathroom. The room was quiet.

Good. She wiped at her cheeks.

He’d gone.

She needed a plan.

Robbie could follow her wherever she went. She didn’t care. She wouldn’t live in fear of him anymore, and she definitely wouldn’t stay here. She clenched her fists with determination.

She’d make some calls and ask for favors. If she took precautions, there was absolutely no reason she couldn’t be onscreen again to do the job she loved so much.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Lucy stuck around the newsroom with Reid, both of them the only staff left at the station. Everyone else had either gone off on various assignments or disappeared upstairs to rub elbows with the network executives.

The time for the press conference to start came and went.

Lucy didn’t attend.

Will needed to focus, and the last thing he needed was Lucy distracting him. That’s what she’d told herself anyway.

After the announcement and questions, they would have a big VIP party for the Crestone executives. Lucy wouldn’t be there, either. She would hang out in the newsroom and help the night producer once the stories came in. Perhaps she and Reid could order a pizza. He’d taken it personally upon himself to teach her inappropriate jokes. Maybe she’d even laugh today. It beat sulking at home.

Neilson stood guard at the KDVX entrance, he disappeared into his surroundings better than anyone she’d ever known. And back in the day, she’d been pretty darn good at disappearing into the wallpaper.

She rose to grab the scripts off of the printer. The phone rang. Reid grabbed the receiver.
